Loren, I am about done with the layout except for the connecting bridge between the tables and for some wiring. I ended up with two tracks as you can see and I am still planning so to how to install the turntable. My two grandsons are now able to run two trains. We have two controllers. One of the most interesting aspect of the project was the landscaping. Although some of the things I included may look a bit incomplete (amature at work) the two boys and I are enjoying the layout. They like to play with their cars and trucks on the layout as well. I still have to get on the ball and get the photo's taken.

I have really appreciated this forum and have used many of the ideas and hints given without which I still bewall1

Nomad, I think whatever you do will be great, loking forward to seeing the progress. I had a 12x4' DMIR layout under construction, I no more than started scenery, and I said, This will bore me like crazy, so BOOM!!! down she came. One of my favorite parts is the benchwork, so I got to do it again, I now have a 10x20' layout that will bring much more enjoyment. No sense in "completing" a layout you wont like. Anyway, cant wait for pics.

Hey, Kevin. I know all about your layout. Yours is another thread I have been following from the beginning. You have got a great layout going to.
As far as rebuilding layouts, there's no sense in keeping it if you won't enjoy it.

trackwork is done again

Hooray!, the trackwork is done again. But I gotta admit it was worth it. This is turning into a real fun layout to operate. I have been sitting there for hours operating the layout and having a ball! I even bought a switchlist program to enhance operations more.

My suggestion: search the Internet. You may be shocked (in a good way) by how much less you'll have to pay for better quality now than even just a couple of years ago!:eek:

You have no idea how cool it is to see pictures of a layout that someone is actually enjoying that doesn't have to look like a centerfold spread in Model Railroader! Go forth and have fun!
 
:wave: Loren. Thanks for sharing your new completed set up. I really like the trackwork. I am still working on the turntable that I got at auction a few months back. But gluing the soft metal pieces that need to be assembled is the berries. I can't seem to get any of the supposedly "real good glues" to hold things together. Seems they hold then when a slight adjustment is made the mated parts come apart again. Oh well, another challange.
 
Riverotter, that is the whole idea. Some buildings to give the tracks reason for being, and that is all I plan on.
Floyd, glad to hear from you! What kind of metal are the pieces you are try to glue? Can they be soldered? Or maybe you should start a thread and ask the folks here. I bet somebody else will have an answer for you.

Loren there are several pieces of what the instructions refer to as "soft metal castings" . The material that the ladders are made of is the same material and it refers to them as "zink alloy castings" this material reminds me of lead since it is so soft, i.e., you can bed it real easy and can clean the flash from them very easy with a razor blade. Most of these parts have to be "glued" to one another although some brass wire has to also be attached to some of the soft metal. At one point instructions say to use solder but it cautions that you have to do it fast so as not to melt the castings. My soldering skills are not that good so I have not tried that for fear that I dod not want to melt the parts.

Your idea of starting a thread is a good one so I will do that. Guess I should have thought of that before.:confused:
 
new garage layout

Ok my old layout in the house is coming down today!
I will be building a new layout in the garage that will be 20'x17'. The tentative trackplan is one done by Screwysquirrel.

I have built the main part of the layout before and it is fun to operate plus gives a long mainline run. I reworked the yard and put in a turntable and roundhouse since I have the Atlas already. Might as well us them:).
I am in the process of insulating the garage now, but still need to figure out a heating source before winter. This will still be ho and I need to share the garage with wifey's car:cry:. The garage is 24'x24' and I get the left side and back wall. I am not interested in a linear layout this time, the one I have got boring real fast. Any comment's are welcome, since this will be my final layout.
I forgot to mention, minimum mainline radius is 22 and there will be a 24" walkway behind the layout. Reach should not be a problem.
