The Galapagos tortoise is the largest land tortoise in the world, living in the Galapagos Islands. Adults can weigh over 200 kilograms and measure 1.2 meters. They feed on plants. Although some tortoises have been known to live for more than 100 years, the species is vulnerable to conservation. These tortoises are threatened mainly at a young age by introduced animals, such as rats, cats, and food competition in the form of goats and cattle.
Since 1965, the Charles Darwin Research Station has been trying to raise their declining population through a program and repatriation of tortoises. By March 2000, 1,000 tortoises had been released into the wild. (source wikipedia)
My modifications:
So far, the base and turtle shell have been glued together...
Those were great!!!
How interesting to see the cuts and folds bring together rounded shells and heads and patterns blending in the sections so pleasing to the eyes!
I have a friend (well, used to be friend) that would poach huge turtles from the swamp next to me. He would make delicious soup out of them (one at a time), then polish the top shell. The would be translucent. He got $1000's of dollars for them. He did finally get caught, but since they did not know he had decimated the swamp of all the big boys, he got off with a slap on the hand. He did stop going into the swam, (he faced years in jail if they found him in there again). He offered me a rather large piece. I did not take it, it was from an endangered species, not cool. I was a large Ivory Statue from a find of a beautiful Geisha girl holding a parasol. In my state, you can own one of these, but you cannot sell any Ivory, give it away, or let someone inherit it, it has to go to the state. It would be hard to explain how you came across something like that. This particular Ivory piece was from the 1930's. I politely declined. I can 3D print one now!!
