A few words about the original:

The Galapagos tortoise is the largest land tortoise in the world, living in the Galapagos Islands. Adults can weigh over 200 kilograms and measure 1.2 meters. They feed on plants. Although some tortoises have been known to live for more than 100 years, the species is vulnerable to conservation. These tortoises are threatened mainly at a young age by introduced animals, such as rats, cats, and food competition in the form of goats and cattle.
Since 1965, the Charles Darwin Research Station has been trying to raise their declining population through a program and repatriation of tortoises. By March 2000, 1,000 tortoises had been released into the wild. (source wikipedia)
