Designing A Layout Based On A Single Industry

Everybody’s kickin’ out some great ideas here, folks! :thumb: I was discussing this topic at another forum, & one of the guys said it sounded “boring” to him, but that he was “more into modeling than operations”… Well, I think the modeling potential of the single industry design could be...

Designing A Layout Based On A Single Industry

I’ve done a lot of “armchairing” on this concept over the last couple of years…designing & building an entire layout based entirely on a single industry, rather than the more traditional approach; having multiple industries on a single layout… Up until now, logging layouts are the only ones...

    HOn30 Mini-Layout

I’ve been working a little more on the sawmill… I’ve attempted to build a log carriage… This is all scrap box stuff…an HO ladder, a couple of I-beams, a couple of N scale automobiles, & some other bits & pieces …Alert to rivet-counters:This is certainly not meant to be a scale representation...

    HOn30 Mini-Layout

I’ve begun construction on a saw mill…I originally was going to use another kit, but I ended up thinking this might work better… For building materials, I started with this IHC ‘Transfer Pier”…(the buildings shown here on the box cover are not included in the kit…just the pier itself…) I cut...

    Guard rails ?

Hi Johnnie! A lot would depend on what era you're modeling, as to what type of gaurd rails would've been used...On rural mountain roads, well into the 1960's & 70's, there was usually no more than a wooden rail, or many times, it would be a heavy steel cable, threaged through heavy...

    Layout Progress

Hi ID! Welcome to The Gauge! :) Thanks for posting the pics! Some of them are a little on the blurry side...If your camera is not equiped with a "macro" lens, you usually won't be able to focus on an object under 2 or 3 feet away...My daughter has a digital camera that I've had that...

Kitty litter / speedi dry ????

Hi Michael, I wouldn't worry about the cats as much as I would what effect most scenic bonding methods would have on the material...i.e. - How would the litter/spedi=dry react to water, glue, paint, etc...? What exactly are you thinking of using it for? Ballst? Ground cover? Rock?

    What to use for backdrop

This shows the backdrop on one of my former layouts... It's not linolium, but vinyl flooring...I flipped it over, & used the back of it to paint the "sky" on... Jim is right...it does require a lot of support, because it is so flimsy...I built this layout as kind of a box, hung on the...

Hi Ding! Welcome to The Gauge! (I take it you're a Tom Clancy fan...? ;) ) I'm working on a small HOn30 logging layout right now, & I don't have a whole lot of pictures yet... This is a trestle scene at one end of the layout...It's the only area that is fully scenicked at this point...
