    Questions About Tortoise Switch Machines

Thanks J.W.! :thumb: Yes, there are already holes in the throwbars… The reason I was asking is that I’m getting ready to lay the track, & I want to go ahead & drill holes in the roadbed directly under the turnout where I can, but there may be a couple of places where it would be better to be...

    Questions About Tortoise Switch Machines

Do I need to drill holes in the center of the roadbed for linking the machine to the throwbar of the turnout, or can I also link to the throwbar on the outside of the rail? I'm using Atlas code 83 turnouts...sub-roadbed is 1/2" plywood...

Starting Over With An HO Layout

Here’s a couple of pics of how I’ve painted the backdrop panels…along with the beginning of some sub-roadbed… I know the backdrop painting isn’t very good, but a lot of it will eventually be covered with scenery, & my hope is that it will just kind of give the hint of some hills in the...

Starting Over With An HO Layout

Thanks guys! :) Well, here’s the base benchwork, along with some masonite panels for the backdrop.(& yours truly) Like I said, I’m building this with my grandsons in mind, so I’m keeping the benchwork only 36” off the floor…looks like the highest track elevation is going to be about 41” high…...

Starting Over With An HO Layout

I’ve begun construction on a new project…an HO layout depicting an Appalachian shortline set in the 1930’s - 1940’s… I’ve always wanted to do something along these lines, but my primary impetus here was to build a RR that I could share & enjoy with my grandsons (at this writing, aged 3 & 4) My...

A Snowy Night On The MTC

Daylight gets away from you fast in the wintertime, & that leaves the MTC’s little 0-6-0 to make its way through the snowy woods on a clear, cold January night, hauling logs to the mill…

    Lumber Shed For The MTC

I’ve begun building a lumber shed for the sawmill area on the MTC layout… I’m building it from styrene strip, & I added a couple of old Central Valley ladders to it… Here’s what it looks like after some painting & weathering… The next step will be to add a corrugated metal roof…

A Little More Progress On The MTC

Thanks guys! :) Here's another shot of the same area...this time the climax is waiting to push a load of logs up the line to the storage pond... I'm wanting to build a lumber shed in the area to the right where the siding is...

A Little More Progress On The MTC

Thanks for the nice comments, guys! :) I use a bunch of different stuff for ground cover…A lot of it is natural…sifted dirt, ground up leaves, small twigs…I also use broken up bits of plaster that I paint to look like loose rock, & lately, I’ve started mixing wood ash with sifted dirt, & using...

Some New Scenery On The MTC

Thanks guys! :) No trick really...it's just something I experimented with...I'm not sure about the exact ratio...maybe 50/50...? The weired thing is that the ash completely disappears when you wet everything down to bond it, & then gradually re-appears about 24 hours later when everything is...
