considering changing from HO to N

The advantages of N scale have been spelled out pretty well in the previous responses. Some disadvantages to think about: 1. Much more limited stock. 2 Very limited number of DCC ready steam locomotives. 3. Depending on the era you are modeling, limited number of available vehicles. The other...

    Micro screws

Mark, thanks for the pointer to the website - that looks real promising. Thanks to all of you for the advice and comments. I agree with you about saving every little screw, etc. My problem at the moment is that I don't have any old stock to scavenge from - time should cure that problem. Thanks...

    Micro screws

Well, I guess I can give that a try - I have often done that with larger machine screws. The size of all these N scale parts makes G scale look more appealing every day! It seems that the parts keep getting smaller and the fingers keep getting clumsier! The most often used tool seems to be a...

    Micro screws

Thanks, Gary. I went to their page and searched - their machine screws start at 1/4 inch - I am looking for some about half that size.

    Micro screws

Does anyone know of a source for an assortment of tiny machine screws and washers? Yesterday, after installing a DCC decoder in a new N gauge Proto 0 - 8 - 0, I managed to drop the screw and washer that fasten the drawbar to the locomotive. Naturally, it disappeared, never to be found again...

    Decal/Road Number/Lettering Remover - Joe's Gel

Man, what beautiful timing! I have decided to change to a freelance RR and need to remove a lot of old names, road numbers, etc. so I can replace them with my custom decals. I have tried several means of removal, and none have been satisfactory. I placed an order with Joe's and hopefully will...

    Red Letter Day

Congratulations, George! Now you can move on to the really fun stuff. Every phase of constructing a layout brings different challenges and frustrations, but in my opinion, the toughest part is laying and ballasting the track.

installing decoders with double sided tape

Deano, thanks for the hot glue tip. It certainly is timely, as I placed an order yesterday for two decoders that I will be installing. Up to this time, I have purchased locos either complete with modem, or have had the hobby shop install them before shipping. I was wondering about how to...

    Christmas lists

What I would like is a well detailed Northern in N scale with DCC and sound. It should run well at slow speed and be in anything other than PRR livery!

    2 month Warning!!!!!

Man, am I ahead of the game! Of course, the reason for that is that in January, when everyone sets their goals, I hadn't even thought of starting a layout. In February, I picked up a Walthers N & Z catalog, and it has been all downhill from there! I designed an N scale layout, got the track...

    Internet Vendors

One of the best out there for N scale is Fifer Hobby. Shipment is fast and they have outstanding customer service. On one order, I accidentally clicked on the wrong item and didn't notice my mistake until the order arrived. They took the item back with no questions asked. Their e-mail...

11/4 Gratiot Valley Show, anyone goin'?

Thanks for the information. I have another commitment that day, but will put it on the calendar for next year.

    FIRE!!!

Andy, thanks for the great information. I had never thought of a campfire, but I think now I will incorporate one into the layout. My layout is in my radio shack, but I never would have thought of using speaker leads to trigger an LED. I guess that light bulb over my head that is supposed to...

    Amusing Observation

nkp174- please do post those -would like to see them! Clark, I had tweaked it a bit myself, but posted the original image here. As usual, most of the steam photos can use a little work because of the strong contrast between the loco and the surrounding area. Good job!

    Atlas VO-1000

I have had an Atlas VO-1000 for about 5 months. Mine came DCC equipped with a decoder. Mine has a very low noise level, and is a nice running little switcher.
