    Front wheels for steam loco

I know Precision Scale made a pilot truck with spoked wheels. I got a handful of them when I was rebuilding my Mantua 2-6-6-2. Not sure how available they are now...they were scarce when I got mine. I will try to find a pic of it.

    Snow fighting in AZ

Got this link from the 4L mailing list (Loyal Legion of Logged on Loggers). It is an awesome account of taking two F-M engines up to fight snowdrifts in AZ. http://iprr.topcities.com/azhwy/index.htm

    on30 outside frame chassis?

They are a beast, that's for sure. If you look closely in the following pic (click the link - BIG picture) you can see the end of an HO scale Vaderbilt tender sticking out past the nose of the On30 2-8-0. D'OH! Forgot the link! http://www.frontiernet.net/~blkbear/Trains/DCP_1258.JPG

    BAchmann Railtruck

But they were so much more economical than the standard loco with freight/passenger cars. Why fire up a full boiler for a less-than-carload of goods/people when you can spend so much less running it on a self-propelled car? That's why these started. someone got the bright idea that running...

    BAchmann Railtruck

Here are a few links to removing the "toy-like" quality: http://hometown.aol.com/on30railroadkits/railtruck-1.html - Has tuneup info as well as a nice box mod for the back end. http://4largescale.com/baxter/41.htm - An interesting mod to the bed...possible in On30 scale. And, of course...

    BAchmann Railtruck

Ok...as promised, i got a chacne to tinker with the Railtruck. I was right. one of the wipers from the front truck was bent down too far for proper contact. Pulled it up, put the truck back on (it is a press-fit) and voila! It runs great now. And, the promised pics: (warning, large files)...

    BAchmann Railtruck

Just picked up one of these railtrucks and figured I'd offer a quick evaluation. Out of the box, it is a beautifully detailed model. They even have molded engine details on the electric motor under the hood to help disguise what it really is. There is a small exhaust pipe running from the...

Its Monday 2-27-06, Weekend modeling accomplishments!

Along with getting the frame built for the HO scale Dragon Mountain Logging CO., I also started knocking together a little 6"x13" display for my desk at work. gotta show off my hobby to everyone else. It's also a nice place to let my first-ever steam engine rest. it's had a HARD life. :)

Dragon Mountain Logging Co. - new home

    Well....today I finished the lower level for the HO scale Dragon Mountain. http://www.frontiernet.net/~blkbear/Trains/DCP_1261.JPG http://www.frontiernet.net/~blkbear/Trains/DCP_1262.JPG http://www.frontiernet.net/~blkbear/Trains/DCP_1263.JPG All it took was 7 - 8' 1"x4" and 4 - 6'...

Is this dcc unit any good

Do most HO scale DCC system handle On30 engines? I would like to convert the Dragon Mountain (both scales) to a single DCC throttle (just different engine codes). Or is this too ambitious?

what type of layout do you prefer

I chose a shelf layout primarily because it left the center of the room free for other furniture (I have a rather LARGE computer desk in there). It is also easier to build in and still leave the room essentially a bedroom if we ever decide to have a child. It is built in manageable sections...

Dragon Mountain Logging Co. - new home

Yeah, down that wall and along the wall it joins with. Should give me about 12'x8' overall.

Dragon Mountain Logging Co. - new home

More big pictures, but I finally got the benchwork (or is that shelf-work) started for the DMLC. http://www.frontiernet.net/~blkbear/Trains/DCP_1256.JPG http://www.frontiernet.net/~blkbear/Trains/DCP_1257.JPG This part is actually for the HO scale, but there will be a similar sized...

    Mountains in Minutes polyfoam

No worries about the flammability of Great Stuff? I can see it as a quick, cheap way to make mountains, but the wall my layout is going on backs the furnace cubby, and I don't want to add a potential SEVERE fire hazard (wood, paper, scenery, etc., will be bad enough). :)

Dragon Mountain Logging Co. - new home

Well, for any who remember, I finally got started on the benchwork for the Dragon Mountain Logging Co. early last year. Well, due to various reasons, that project was scrapped. Mostly due to the fact that I had to move from that house. Now the wife and I are in our own place, and I've got a...

    Trestle bent

ok...the scratchbuilt climax is on hold while I try to relocate the parts I was going to use for the trucks. In the mean time, I decided to start practicing building a trestle. I got some hardwood dowels from the local Chase Pitkin (cleaned them right out!) and stained them with Minwax Red...
