This is a bad time of year (as if there was a GOOD time of year) for a heart attack. Best wishes for a speedy recovery!

    Bachmann Spectrum 2-8-2?

That's the Bachmann model of the Chinese-built Mikado that was in use by the Susquehanna for a while. Last I heard it was sold to an historical society?

Wall Mounted Layout? How do you mount it on the wall?

    http://www.frontiernet.net/~blkbear/Trains/DCP_1464.JPG On30 on a 1x1 and 1x4 framed shelf layout.

    Picture's with sunshine!

That retaining wall is a Woodland Scenics HO Retaining wall. you know...the one that is made of plaster! :) It's amazing how realistic it became when hit with a Minwax Walnut colored stain-stick. The trestle is light-weight balsa wood held together with carpenter's glue, and could withstand...

    strap it!

Here is my "benchwork". All 1x4 screwed and glued together, and held to the wall with multiple drywall screws. Before any heavy terrain is added they will be reinforced from below by some new bookshelves, however I know from experience that they will already hold multiple gallons of paint...

    next step...

since mine doesn't really have room for drastically varied terrain, I just put a sheet of 1/4" ply over the 1x4s and then blue foam on top of that. Check it out. http://www.frontiernet.net/~blkbear/Trains/DCP_1473.JPG

    Going loco for August

The prettiest RS-11 I've ever seen: Depew, Lancaster & Western #1804 pulling a cut of covered hoppers across Walnut St. in Batavia, NY.

    Identification of Electrical Item

It is indeed a pickup unit for power to a loco or car. I've used these with GREAT effect on my MDC Shay as they fit nicely behind the side-frames on the trucks, and the wire is almost invisible as it rubs the back of the wheels.

    HO in cramped apartment

I agree the shelf style was the way to go for me. Gave me a 15" deep shelf that ran along three walls in my office. I also built an upper tier that matched the lower shelf, but also had a 6" wide continuation around the room above the doors and windows. THis way, I can have my HO logging...

i like your idea, Shay. I'll likely use it to get power to the upper level. The 1x4 is temporary for now...but the whole area is going to be faced off with stained and urethaned red oak, and the opening behind the 1x4 will be filled in. This will extend around the area for the HO scale...

    Starting On30 Class-A climax

The wood is actually a Banta Modelworks replacement On30 Shay cab. I can't bring myself to actually remove the cab from my Bachmann Shay (yet?) so I decided to use it for a new engine. The big pic is due to my Kodak DX3900 digital camera. Every so often I get a good, close pic to come out...

    Weekend accomplishments

Almost finished. Only have two small straight sections to build. the last corner is going to be a large trestle, extending down to the HO portion. I'm hoping to run a nice chasm and waterfall behind it. But the above picture is the last part using the 1x2...back to 1x4 now that it...

    Starting On30 Class-A climax

Ok...I'm resurrecting an old thread here, but I finally got to do a little more work on it. http://www.frontiernet.net/~blkbear/Trains/DCP_1321.JPG the MDC Climax boiler is a stand-in...I'm going to use some brass pipe to make a T-boiler (it should add some weight).

    Weekend accomplishments

I spent the weekend getting some of the framework for the On30, around-the-room, layout built and installed in my office. The On30 will be up near the ceiling to allow for the around-the-room setup, yet still maintain an ability to turn the room back to a bedroom if necessary. This level is...

Museum days on the Dragon Mountain RR (big pic)

In an effort to increase revenue...the Dragon Mountain RR held the first-annual "museum days" on their line. Inviting numerous tourist organizations, and importing some antique equipment, the Dragon Mountain hopes to begin a new trend, and improve its standing in the community. Though...

    Roundhouse 2 Truck Shay's

Here's a pic of an MDC two-truck Shay kit I put together a while ago. At first I couldn't get it to run right. It would wobble all over and the side gears would keep jumping cogs. I put the NWSL regear kit into it, and followed the Shay book's recommendation to clip down the gears on all but...
