This does allow allow for a straight route, and a constant curved route. It's all in the points. Just modify your geometry to allow a straight rail to form the point for your diverging route, and a curved rail for the constant. Only one rail ever does any work in your points.

If you want remote reliablility with sectional track, I would reccomend Kato Unitrack turnouts. Not as cost effective, but well worth the price. Remember, you get what you pay for in this hobby. Kato turnouts are also power-routing with live frogs by default, which also helps quite a bit...

Looks like the valve gear bound up or was out of alignment and struck it's mount. Possibly improper installation, possibly a small bur. It could be almost anything. Bachmann will probably tell you to send it to them, and in return you'll get a new loco. Pretty much their standard procedure...

I don't know a source of the scenery items, off hand. However, I do know that Model Power makes Heavyweight observation and combine cars. Last time I checked their website, they were on clearance for dirt cheap prices.

Sorry, I know I'm not really on topic. I had one more thing to add though. Natural Lighting - get as much as you can. If that's not really possible, just try to avoid big swings toward oranges or blues with cheap lights. Lighting hues people aren't used to can drive them out of a store...

You're right, they're known for being sub-par performers. Lack of traction tires, and being relatively light for their size doesn't provide much in the way of pulling power. I believe there is an aftermarket traction tire conversion available. Would probably make quite a difference.
