There is an excellent website run by Michael Crisafulli, The Hunley where he reconstructs the Hunley in interactive 3D using the latest available information.
I checked with him to learn that the hatch coaming flanges show evidence of raised rivets. He also indicates that the hull was still...
I have been pondering what to do about the rivets; Renova rendered them in a slight grey tone to contrast with the black iron of the hull. Whether the hull plates were cold or hot riveted, the conservators have not yet indicated. Nevertheless, the rivets would not have differed much in color...
Renova CSS Hunley
When I learned this model was released I just had to have one (actually two). I have a couple of other resin kits but they are somewhat inaccurate. Renova’s kit seems to be based on the latest information available. I live about about 5 hours from Charleston, SC and have...
Don't forget to scent them! No kidding, you can get different essences at boutiques, health stores, etc.
As a matter of fact, your idea sounds so cool, I think I'll do that for my wife!
Thanks!
I built it too last year (before joining Zealot) and thought it a well-designed model. Someone else must have thought so, too, since it was stolen from a display table.
Your build and presentation is very well done. Where do the figures come from?
If you don't want to be concerned with replacing the battery, Wal-Mart (and I suppose other outlets) sells a variable DC power module that goes from 1 to 12 volts. Nice little unit and costs about the same as a pack of alkaline D-cells.
Years ago I used incandescent bulbs (grain o wheat's included in that category) but I now use LEDs. LED's will be operating for your grandchildren!
No resistor needed if you operate them with 3 volts DC. Due to their low current requirements, you can wire a bunch of them in parallel and...
Styrofoam not silkspan
The comments about the problems with silkspan are right on. The solution is regular old styrofoam, the stuff in which products come packed.
Cut it so that it fits the sections between bulkheads....on any model we card types like to build. A bit of rubber cement will...
He-162
Forgive my criticism but it is a constructive one from a regular customer. Perhaps it is the way the model is built but, it appears that the main gear are mounted at too extreme of an angle. I have seen the real article at RAF Hendon. The main wheels really do not extend outside the...
Burt Lancaster in "The Train." There was some controversy over this film which was supposed to be in the running for an Academy Award. This is one outstanding film in which the train plays a pivotal role but not as a character, rather as an avatar for the main character.
Thanks for that link, Archangel! The model looks wonderful, but will need modification. One of the preeminent and surprising features of the Hunley is that it was flush-riveted! So, those raised rivets will have to go in favor of a something more representative of the technology.
Otherwise...
DrWayne. These nice images can be improved without resorting to photoshop. The blue-sky background is fooling your camera's metering system into thinking there is more ambient light which closes the aperture. Check your camera for exposure compensation. If you give it +1, possibly +2 stops...
I'll be the one to ask. Did you make masters or any kind of a print that others could use to create their own copy?
I thought it was a kit and was ready to buy one. So, there!
