How to make Buildings... The modern way.

I did a search and found a very low-end milling machine at http://www.maxnc.com/page11.html It's about $895. Not cheap but when the next-cheapest unit I was able to find was $1295... I'm very interested in learning more about what's involved, whether the $895 unit is good for anything, etc.

    My Layout

CavlrZ, I can't do a real good job of explaining it right now, but if you can get your hands on a copy of the December 2004 Classic Toy Trains, there's an article that describes a couple of different methods. The first and simplest method is sufficient for these purposes.

    My Layout

I would be sorely tempted to put a pseudo-hill/tunnel on one corner (there was an issue of CTT that had a layout with one that was made of plywood, with a flat top so you could put buildings or track on it, and the sides were done with pieces of wood cut and sanded and painted to look like...

    prices of stuff on ebay

I think a lot of people also don't know about the discount retailers online. Just as there are people who have their radio dial set to their favorite AM talk station and the dial hasn't moved in 20 years, some people don't seem to venture much past their ISP's home page, their e-mail, and Ebay...

have you ever had to leave NEGITIVE feedback on ebay?

On one of my most recent purchases, I paid immediately (Paypal) and never heard a peep from the seller. After about a month, I got fed up and started the process of filing a complaint. First thing it said to do was to get the person's phone number. I got the phone number. Then some things came...

    I need help!

The best price I found on the K-Line set is $34. http://www.hobbylinc.com/htm/mdk/mdkko1404.htm If you want a longer train, you can add cars to it. Any O27 type car will look and work just fine with it. Something like this would be ideal. http://www.hobbylinc.com/htm/mdk/mdkk6221471.htm...

    I need help!

K-Line (a Lionel competitor) has a battery-operated O gauge set that it sells for about $40. They're not easy to find, which is a shame because I think they'd sell like crazy. But for ease of setup it can't be beat, it'll be pretty durable, and most importantly, it'll look the part.

    Lionel Locomotive Power-up Reset problem

I'll buy your crossed leads hypothesis but unfortunately I don't have a wiring diagram. Another likely possibility is that the sequencer itself is defective. That's all electronic these days so there isn't much that you can fix on those. I would suggest posting the question on the O Gauge...

    Lionel Locomotive Power-up Reset problem

As far as smoke, usually a non-smoker means the locomotive hasn't warmed up enough. Letting it sit in neutral for a while helps. Adding some cars (or weighing down the cars you have) to make the engine work harder helps too. Some people claim that aftermarket smoke fluids smoke a lot better than...

Marx Commodore Vanderbuilt with Pullman passenger cars

That's a gorgeous set. Is it original? Cavlrz, are you familiar with the Marx and Commodore Vanderbilt groups on Yahoo? http://groups.yahoo.com/group/MarxTrain/ http://groups.yahoo.com/group/cv_joint/

Where to buy the Lionel 4660 power pack?

I'm glad you found some. It stinks that sometimes it takes a few Ebay auctions to get what we need (I need some Marx O34 switches, and that seems to be the *only* way to get those anymore), but at least that option exists.

    LHS closing

Lucky for me I have several good shops close to me, one of which is strictly a train shop (and it specializes in O/O27 and S). I buy a lot of my trains from that store, but I buy a lot of raw materials (basswood, styrene, metal, paint) from the others. I think R/C and crafts do more than...

    need some advice

Man, I wish I'd seen this thread sooner. The best way to clean old Lionel rolling stock is with a soft paintbrush. Brush the dust away. Some Lionel paints are a lot less stable than others (red is notoriously unstable) so never, ever use any type of cleaner at all on red. Unpainted Lionel cars...

Where to buy the Lionel 4660 power pack?

Is this transformer intended for Lionel HO, or for O? If it's a low-end O gauge transformer, I would be inclined to ask on the for-sale/wanted forum over on the O Gauge Railroading forum (http://ogaugerr.infopop.cc/eve/ubb.x ). Maybe someone over there has a spare or two they'd like to part...

i just got another marx engine off e-bay

I buy mine at a local train store but I'm not sure where he gets them from. If you don't mind ordering over the phone or online, Robert Grossman (www.trainpartsformarx.com) is the best place to get Marx parts. He also has replacement wheels if you need them, and the tools to pull and replace...

    Filling plastic gaps

You'll get a bunch of recommendations. Most hobby shops (and even the model sections of discount stores) sell at least one brand of putty. Testor's brand is cheap and common. It's not as strong as some of the others but it'll work. In a pinch I've heard of people using lots of other things...

    very basic layout question

The most reliable O27 switches on the market right now are made by K-Line and they cost about $20 apiece. Setup is very easy. Make your long straight section, with a K-Line switch on either end, then use a combination of curved and straight sections to make it loop back onto itself. You'll need...

    very basic layout question

Cid, you are partially correct about shorts and AC and reverse loops. With a three-rail system (like Lionel O27 or O, or Marklin HO) you can do reverse loops with no special wiring. Just hook it up and it'll work. 2-rail AC like American Flyer still has the same problem with shorts that N scale...

    Where to get styrene

If worse comes to worse and you can't find anything else, those 60-cent plastic For Sale signs (available at any store that sells hardware) are polystyrene. They come in a couple of different sizes, and the different sizes are different thicknesses, so it's workable, although it's nice to have a...

    styrene for rivet overlay

Check out the really thin plastic Beware of Dog/No Smoking/For Sale signs that sell for 75 cents at a hardware store. They may be just thin enough to take your rivet detail, and they're thick enough that you can glue them with solvent. At least I have, successfully, in the past. Just make sure...
