    Thomas T.T.E. Again

I already have him. These pix were taken before he arrived from Santa Clause. I need to taken more pix because the scenery looks better now and river bottom is painted. Behind my house is a field full of weeds and bbushes that make great trees. Ah, free. I love that.

    Thomas T.T.E. Again

This is a great excuse to have a layout built. I only had a 18"x72" timesaver type switching layout to my name. Lack of space in a condo, with 2 young kids. Well, my daughter(4.5yrs) is really into Thomas... so Dad(me) seized the opportunity to get another layout out of this. Christmas was on...

    Steamtown?

It's definitely a 2 day trip. My Dad, Daughter and I did the trip last summer. We met at Strasburg about lunch time on Saturday. We spent the whole day there: rode the excursion train, hit the PRR museum across the street and then stayed in the Caboose motel down the street. It's a great...

    Train Shows

I went Sunday. All I got was 6 packs of Proto 33" flat back wheel sets for $32. Being that I usually pay $9 plus I found it to be a good buy. I brought the family with me thinking there would be Thomas stuff for the kids to play with but they only had a small setup at the front door. My...

    Thomas T.T.E. Again

Thomas along with the Polar Express and Hogwarts Express from Harry Potter expose children to our hobby, sort of through the back door. Yes, I have successfully brainwashed my kids to love trains... hopefully it sticks. I try to get them involved in all the aspects of the hobby and have them...

    cheap ballast

Here's a posting I started a few months back about a guy selling ballast on eBay. I'm guessing some of it is sweep-n-lock patio sand. http://www.modelrailroadforums.com/forum/showthread.php?t=5008 definitely use the magnet.

Is this a DCC Friendly Turnout?

Is this a DCC Friendly Turnout?

I got old Shinohara #8 curved turnouts with electric frogs. Big short in the DCC world, AARRGGHHHhhh! This is how I'm remedying the problem. Does anyone have any feedback? This is one of the turnouts. There is a metal bar at the points and the closure rails at the frog touch, causing a short...

Green Lane Bridge over Schuylkill river

Relic I think I remember that article in MRR not to long ago. I just have to go through my well organized reference library of Model Magazines:thumb: ... OH, I mean big pile of completely messed up magazines from all different years and publisherssign1 . I'll have to do some searching.

Green Lane Bridge over Schuylkill river

On the layout my Dad and I are building (see link in my signature), we're going to need a bridge over a river and 2 tracks. The bridge that my Dad suggested was the Green Lane bridge in Philadelphia suburb of Manayunk. The car road next to the bridge is actually Green lane rd but everyone calls...

    Store interiors

A quick place to get a few interiors http://gatewaynmra.org/download.htm#interiors A nice site to get alot of info. Good reference for detailing building. Many small track plans, 4x8. I also googled "store front", "store interior", and "building interior". Store interior alone got 45,000...

    OnTrack's Official Layout Thread.

PS Oops, I forgot to tell you to cut off the extra movable points lever arm and glue that to the underside of the points. Then the machine arm can slide right into either of the 2 holes they provide on it. Ron

    OnTrack's Official Layout Thread.

I used that method on an old layout I built back when I was a teenager. I saw the technique in a Modelrailroader mag back in the late 80's. It worked well for a cheap invisible switch machine. Alot more cost effective than $15 for a tortouse machine. Make sure the rail joiners are removable for...

    Plywood for L-girders?

Thanks Wayne Been here awhile but haven't put up many post. Now with the new layout under way I'm sure the post count will skyrocket, hehe. Check out the plan and pix so far http://www.trainboard.com/railimages/showphoto.php/photo/19237/cat/550...

    Plywood for L-girders?

I've use the traditional pine 1x2's and 1x4's for past L-girder benchwork, but my Dad brought up the suggestion of using ripped down plywood to make the girders. We would glue and screw all joints. Almost like making our own engineered beams, like in houses. Has anyone ever tried this or heard...

    walthers turntable feedback?

Has anyone heard of any reviews on the walthers prebuilt turntable? I'm starting a new layout soon and will need a turntable. This is the first time I'll ever have a turntable on a layout I've built. Is there any prep work or special heads up someone could offer? Other than the high price is...

    New plan, Comments Welcome

Ahh, A light bulb turns on. Thanks Russ I see that in all the mags and plans, but for some reason I wasn't applying it to my plan. I was viewing the layout as an inclosed self sufficient world. That's not true to life! I'll start to vary the industries now. Here is a link to a clearer view...

    New plan, Comments Welcome

Here is the most current version. I reduced the radii by 2", on the upper left loops only. It added 4" to my aisle northwest of the roundhouse. Anyone have any ideas for an industry for the lower right area? Mainly pertaining to the green branchline. I have a small run around and 2 sidings but...

    New plan, Comments Welcome

The aisles are a little tight. The one hiccup in the plan is that it use ti be O scale. The aisles were 24" at the narrowst parts. One way i helped widen the aisles was to extend the upper left lobe out 3'. That allowed me to swing the center peninsula up abit. They are still narrow in one spot...
