Where do the Empties come from?

The LAJ is a very cool road and deserves to be modeled. I could do that, but not ready to take the chance on ruining my locos! Coincidentilly, I am running CF7s. Hey, for all you complete loop continuous run folks, did you know that the LAJ actually has a loop? Yep, they could mindlessly...

Fun day out with Dr Wayne (pic heavy)

Hey Wayne, check it out!! Look at the uncoupling magnet in the first photo! So magnetic uncoupling it is prototypical afterall! And I don't see any hickory sticks from above in that photo either! So what do all of the "skewer" people think of that??

Where do the Empties come from?

Yep, and the two reasons why are that I really like the Yellow-bonnet scheme of Santa Fe, and I haven't come up with my own free-lanced scheme. I was thinking the other day that I might come up with a name for my shortline, paint up one battered beaten old loco for it, and then run my railroad...

    not enough power?

Thanks Don. The cheap power packs probably have a fairly high internal resistance, and that has to be calculated into the equation too. The result is, as you mention, that as the current goes up, the internal voltage drop goes up, leaving less for the loco. All this would be a function of the...

    not enough power?

Missed it big time! I was doing some research, and it came to my attention that every transformer uses flux. Very interesting. I started digging even deeper, and I cannot find a single transformer manufacturer that uses GERN brand flux in their transformers. What is up with that? Seems we...

Where do the Empties come from?

Kutler, thank you for the information, and also for your input into other threads concerning operations. My particular freelanced shortline is supposed to be similar to the Los Angeles Junction in operation. My rr serves an industrial area in the vicinity of Houston, Texas, in the 1970s...

New moderator changes on the Gauge

Thanks everyone, and Deano, thank you for your previous work and hope to see you here often.

    not enough power?

My two cents: First, we are talking about a single locomotive here. If the power pack is "powerful enough" to run the loco while it is on track near the wiring terminals, then it is powerful enough to run the loco further away too. If the power pack is "powerful enough" to run the loco on...

    Feeder Lines

Twenty bucks for 25' of #14 is cRaZy. Look around some other places, it should be WAY WAY cheaper than that.

    Convince me

I favor HO because it is small enough for a decent layout in a moderate space, yet it is large enough to tinker with.

    Feeder Lines

I'm with Jeff on all points. For that long of a run, I would use minimum #14 and would be more comfortable with #12

    a tribute to barney secord

I'm not really into steam, but the loco pictured below is a beauty, Not sure what it is, but something just draws my attention to it and I think "Wow!" Very nice engine. Of course, it doesn't hurt to have GERN Industries in the background. Wayne, can you give some background on the loco?

    a tribute to barney secord

The opportunity to fly in Barney's two-winger over gorgeous scenery and wonderful trains would be absolutely marvelous. Wayne, if I ever get up that way, I will expect an invite.

    Workin' the yard

The building looks real good too. Impressive work, I look forward to seeing more.

Lament with me, my dear friends.

Oh man, that isn't good. You have my sympathies, as do the busted up passenger cars.

    Tree Troubles

Here is an alternative way to make trees, and is fairly cheap and works well. http://forum.zealotmodels.com/t109129/

Decals made from a home printer

I've had okay results with Testors sheets. Once printed, let the ink dry for a couple hours, then spray a thin coat of decal bonder over that, let dry awhile, once more light coat, let dry overnight, then you're ready to go. Alternatively, just follow the instructions on the package...
