    Mainline spacings

Just to throw some math in to compare the model to the prototype: For yard track spacings of 13.5 feet between tracks: 13.5 feet x 12 inches per foot = 162 inches HO is 1/87th scale : 162 inches divided by 87 = 1.862 inches 1 13/16ths inches in decimal is 1.8125, so it would be...

    Repowering my Athearn Loco

Well, nix on the Overland chassis and drive, seems they haven't made that for years.

    Repowering my Athearn Loco

Loren, that would probably work if I can't find anything else. Right now, I am looking at an article in an old MRR mag. It has info about a CF7 built form a RailPower Products CF7 shell with an Overland Models chassis and drive. I'm not familiar with Overland Models. Anyone know about their...

    Repowering my Athearn Loco

    Repowering my Athearn Loco

All the repowering kits I found online are actually for the older Athearn Blue boxes. The newer stuff like the CF-7 has slightly different u-joint components and the flywheels and shaft size are different. The CF-7 shells are actually accurate and look good, I just wish the drive was better.

Merry Christmas! The snow scene looks really good. Kevin, you are doing some great work. Keep it up!

    Repowering my Athearn Loco

Well, originally I was happy with my Athearn CF-7s, but then I went and bought an Atlas Master Seires U23B. And geez, that thing runs smooth as silk, and the Athearns now seem noisy and rough with poor low-end speed control. Just to see where the problem was, I removed the universal joints...

    Beginners: Learn from my mistakes!

You are correct on the "fright" factor. That is the major thing that has held me back in the past. I was afraid to do something for fear of doing it wrong. But, I have discovered, 4 out 5 times, it comes out okay or better, and if it doesn't come out okay, just use it as a learning...

    Magnet location

Dansco, what I prefer is the Kadee "under the ties" magnet. It is strong enough to be buried in the roadbed so you don't have to cut out the ties. The track goes right over them, and the magnet gets covered under the ballast. There is no doubt that cars with steel weights or axles can be...

    Magnet location

Kevin, the uncoupling magnet issue, sadly, isn't a simple one. You should read everything you can, check out the Kadee website, and other stuff on the net. You should perform some experiments like DocWayne has stated. Set up some track with some magnets and play around with them. The...

    Uncoupler question

Hey John... Welcome to The Gauge! I have some experience with magnets, but I am in HO scale. Still, here is a thread which may be of benefit. It may give you some food for thought about the placement of your magnets. If it doesn't help, just ignore me!

Wow Kevin, you are making amazing progress. And I know what you mean about the decoders. I'm sure you are chomping at the bit to get those locos running!

Regardless of the prototype roof vent, that looks very good to me. Definitely post more photos of your progress.

    My Open House = Successful

Oops, sorry Andrew, I missed your post. The GERN brand flux was certainly the highlight of the openhouse. The folks were pretty impressed with it, and I got to tell them "eventually the entire layout will be up to that standard." The round-robin group sounds very much like what the...

    My Open House = Successful

Oh... I also got to explain how GERN Texas Division got its start, with DocWayne and everything. That was neat. And if you ever get down this way, I would love to have you run trains with me.

    My Open House = Successful

Thank you sir! There was one gentleman there who seemed very interested in all aspects of my layout. He was taking photos and asking questions. I asked him several times if he wanted to run the trains, but he said "no" each time. At one point, it was just me and him there, and I was showing...

    dcc track bus length question

How long is the bus going to be? With 14ga, I'd try to keep the length less than 30 feet.
