Cold Solder - as advertised on TV

This has answered the question for me. I wondered how long those batteries would last. Being that this tool is a resistance soldering iron, I would guess the tip is made of carbon. I have an American Beauty resistance soldering unit and built my own single probe tool from a cheap 25 watt...

    How to airbrush brass?

jetrock: I used to use an automotive primer made by Plasti-kote called Car Color #632 gray. I did some of my own testing and found that it was unnecessary. The Pollyscale adheres well to brass. The best paint for adhesion is Scale Coat, but it is solvent based which makes it a pain to clean up...

    How to airbrush brass?

Polly scale is my favorite paint. It goes on nicely and is easy to clean up. With brass models, I disassemble them and soak the parts in Scalecoat II Wash Away to remove the clear lacquer that is applied to them at the factory. Then I wash the parts with warm water and dish washing liquid. I...

LOL! Copied from another forum (I could'n resist to pass it)

Since this discussion has caused a flury of new clients, my pricing for painting light bulbs (both working and non-working) has increased by 18%. :D

How do I make these in N scale?

I think you could make that color by mixing white into some Penn Central green.

Did I get the right soldering iron?

40 watts might be better (you need to try it first). If you have an electronics store nearby (other than Radio Shnook) you can get liquid flux, 91% alcohol and 60 / 40 solder (thin). I find that the liquid flux works best, even if you are using rosin core solder. The liquid penetrates much...

How do I make these in N scale?

The problem I have found with straws is that they are made of polypropelyene and don't hold paint very well.

The HO Piermont Western Railway circa 1915

The Grandt line turnbuckles have a .015" core for wire to fit in. Just clip them at the ends, slip them onto the wire and touch a small drop of CA from the back. They work like a charm.

Yes, the Fox trucks are MDC. Funaro & Camerlengo makes a nice Fox truck with the leaf spring in it. I have to see if they sell those separately. Grandt Line makes some killer turnbuckle as well as other neat stuff. So does Tichy. For reference I use some of the Train Shed's Cyclopedias. They...

    metal wheels

Intermountain now makes a nice nickle plated brass wheelset with metal axle (1 wheel insulated) and the wheels are thinner than RP-25 but thicker than the Proto-87 standard. These wheels operate on commercial track and they look great. Reboxx also has the same size wheelsets with axle lengths...

    OK, whadja get??

Let's see, a 1 lb. bar of white chocolate, a vibrating thingy for my lower lumbar (back problems you know), a color photo book of Frank Lloyd Wrights interiors, a Tichy HO 150 ton crane, a Tichy HO boom car, an Atlas N Erie reefer and a Microtrains N Swift reefer. AND LOTS OF MISC. CANDY so I...

The HO Piermont Western Railway circa 1915

The model T is (if my memory serves me well) a Campbell kit. Don't think they make them anymore but Jordan makes some good ones (and they are cheap). Jordan miniatures Micron Art makes some great photo etched kits but they are very expensive. Micron Art

The HO Piermont Western Railway circa 1915

Hey John, when it comes to today's models, there's no being stuck anymore. This new stuff blows brass out of the water. Stamping or etching brass just can't compete with today's mold technology. And most of them run very well, and pull quite a bit to boot. I'll tell Ray you said Hi.

The HO Piermont Western Railway circa 1915

Yup, did those for Ray a couple of months ago. He gave me an Overland SD-45 to use as a paint guide but these 3 are P2K. Let me tell you, after seeing the P2K's you would throw rocks at the Overland ones.

Are the pins on my Kadee's really needed?

That works fine, just make sure that you won't be needing them somewhere down the road. I checked, they smell like steel. Cold Rolled low carbon I believe.

Wayne, I don't think that's unethical at all. It would be wrong if you were to just make molds of the Westerfield car, cast a bunch and then sell them for profit. But you will just be using their kit as a guide so I see no harm in that.
