Think Jays Galactica is lonely, need some help

Yup, SJ is correct. The TOS Galactica is about 4 1/2' long and due to be pulled out of mothballs and finished soon, now that I have the lighting components.
Provided I can pull myself away from helping Bazookajo finish the suit of Cylon Armor... LOL.

A scale fleet?
Now I really want to put together a set where they are all to scale sign1.
Let's see, at 1/200 the galactica would be about 3 meters (10 feet). That could be downstairs in the family room, and the pegasus, with waterproofing could go up on the roof, the cylon basestar I could put up on the garage,.......

Fixed flight pods for now
Well gang,
I've been bashing it around in my head for some time now, and I just can't figure a way to make the flight pods retractable. The attached image illustrates the problem. The light blue lines in the top arms show the hull outline where the arms intersect it.
The top pair of arms are in the fully extended position,
the middle pair partially retracted,
and the bottom pair are in the fully retracted position.
I simply haven't been able to come up with something that works. The space inside the hull is about the same length as the upper arm, so the arms need to slide inside each other, or "telescope" somehow. On an 18 inch model we only have about 3cm (1 1/4 in) in which to build the mechanism, and it needs to collapse to at least half that size.
So, unless someone has a solution I'm going to design it so the model can be built with pods extended, or pods retracted, but no retractable landing pods.
Getting close now, but I've been very busy with work and other life stuff lately. Getting back on track now though.

OK, here's a quickie hand sketch of what I was thinking of for telescoping legs, for the BSG. As you have sectioned in the picture above, I thought of three separate sleeves the slide inside of each other with inner and outer folded lips that act as stops and help to reinforce the the leg strength. you can go with more sections if need be as long as each section has the same mesh so that they all....mesh...together.
The inner and outer lips would be folded onto each separate section of the telescoping sleeve and final assembly of each sleeve would be folded over the previous part.

Thanks to CJTK1701 and Theo I've worked up a method for retractable landing bays. Instead of folded flaps though I'm using strips of thick card, or layered card.
The attached image illustrates the method, based on what CJ and Theo illustrated earlier. It turned out to be one of those "couldn't see the forest for the trees" type things. Once I got on the right track it clicked right in.
The telescoping portion of the arms are roughly square. The diagram below shows a cross section of the arms.
As piece 1 is pushed in, the red "plate" at its inner end hits the red plate at the end of piece 2, and piece 2 starts moving in, until it hits the end of piece 3. When pulled out again, piece one moves until the red plate hits the blue stoppers inside piece 2, then it starts pulling piece 2 along with it, until the red plate of piece 2 hits the stoppers inside piece 3. Simple, and very effective. The same technique could be used with cylinders to simulate hydraulics, telescopes, telescoping legs, all kinds of good things.
Last night I built a test piece using blue stopper strips on the outer edges of pieces 1 and 2 (more like CJ's original sketch) instead of the red plate, and it worked like a dream. I came up with the idea of the plates later, since it increases the amount the overall tube shrinks or grows. It might not be as strong, but I'll test this technique as well and find out.

I was like you SJ, I knew how to do it but for whatever reason couldn't make sense of it in my head.
I was wondering, now that we well and truly missed our inyended Christmas release, are we going to be doing any fleet ships in the meantime before all the bugs are worked out for the Big G?

When I was looking at it the first time I couldn't understand wy there were 3 parts to make the arm.
But the third part is in the hull of the Galactica an the outher 2 are on the out sidewall1

Retracting arms
Howdy all.
Haven't had much energy around 3D work lately. I've been more into building. Just got wind of the free model competition and have an idea for an entry too. Good thing I have until June sign1.
I've fine-tuned the landing bay arms and tested the two different techniques. Using solid strips seems to work better. The "plates" don't support the arms as much, but it may not be significant. As soon as I can I'll send some test builds to nothing and skupilkinson, and we'll see how it shapes up.
Skupilkinson, good question about other ships. I hadn't really thought about it. I've been focused on the Galactica. I'll take a look-see and if I can make something ready in between I will.

I must say I was actually surprised (and proud) at how many we've done so far. It certainly pays to sit back and think about what we have accomplished every now and then, rather than always thinking about what we still have to left to do.

True buddy, we've got alot done in the past few months I think. Sorry I've not been too great on assisting with the Big G. I guess it's easy to sidetracked and pulled to other things when if you stand still long enough. LOL

Thanks CJ. The mesh I've got is what we'll be using for now. Too far in to make any serious changes anyway.
