Captain Jack's simple solution to the problem: Starboard is where you can see the stars, port is where the wine is; so it is always recommended to go to port first and then, after a while, starboad will be everywhere..!

“Port” is a short word, like “Left”. “Starboard” is a longer word, like “Right”. Of course this doesn’t work for the red/green thing.
Er, don't forget the US Navy got most of the traditions from the Royal Navy
