How to create an aerial view of my layout?

Hello everyone, i have seen articles in the past explaining how to take photos of a model railroad from above, and then photo shop them together to create an overall aerial view of ones layout. Does anyone know how this is acompolished? Does anyone know where i can read about how this is done? Thanks!
 
Did your digital camera come with any software? Usually something like PhotoShop Elements can do things like this. If you didn't get anything, search the web - there's lots of free stuff out there. Somewhere here on The Gauge is information on how to use GIMP - one of the free programs (I think it stands for Graphic Image Manipulation Program, in case you are wondering... ;) ).
