I have been a long time fan of the technique of "layering" in order to add detail to the models that I build. When done correctly (through raising, recessing, or a combination of both), very interesting effects can be achieved. Recently, I have seen (on a couple of forums and facebook) a video that discusses the technique of "layering". Here is that video:

Michael's videos are superb, I found his videos over the Christmas period, whilst researching some railway models I was making for a friends layout.

Even if you have no interest in railways, the techniques and presentation of his videos are very well done.

Also those using Inkscape will find many videos of use too

Many of the same techniques are easily transferable from one hobby (or material) to another. You may have to tweek the process slightly to fit your specific needs. However, videos like this are woth their weight in gold.
