    LAJ HO layout

diesel Did a little doodling w/ your plan to give you some ideas. Here's a link to my pix of the A Yard & House tracks: https://picasaweb.google.com/107389354387456095061/LAJINFO1AYARDHOUSETRACKS Sorry for the pix being disorganized as that's not the way they are in my Picasa. The track charts...

    LAJ HO layout

Diesel Here's some track work for your LAJ A Yard. Can't say it's just a 3 way. LOL The spur going off to the left thru the Xing is going to Cargill Salt. The rest going right are the yard tracks.

    LAJ HO layout

Diesel Like your latest plan also. Can't help you w/ track charts right now as changed from Windows Vista to Windows 7 so all my files are scattered. The middle aerial is the Vernon Main/Growers & Higgins leads. Your plan shows a 3 track & 5 track yards? on left side. Is one the Fruitland Team...

    LAJ HO layout

Bill Here's a track chart & an aerial of the LAJ's Horn Lead [as in shoe horn :)]. As can be seen the only "scenery" is buildings, streets & some tracks. The only veg is a few weeds here & there. Some of the buildings literally hug the tracks. And the curves here aren't the sharpest either. But...

    LAJ HO layout

Curves on the J go down to 85 degrees ( 10.2" R HO) w/ #3 switches. Laid out a 10" curve & ran an atlas S-4 & 40' boxcar around it many times w/ no derailments. Ditto w/ Athearn CF7. All had standard size Kadee #148s. Couldn't do it w/ a 50' car though. So 15" radius should work fine. To see...

    MTH and NCE

    Here's a discussion of a MTH loco & DCC on trainorders.com: http://www.trainorders.com/discussion/read.php?3,2390725,2390967#msg-2390967

    MTH and NCE

Do a browser or Google search for "mike's train house & dcc". You should get a few hits.

    MTH and NCE

Problem w/ MTH is their system is not real DCC but their own system. So the 2 systems aren't compatible. You'll have to replace their decoder w/ a real DCC decoder or buy their system.

    MTH? Walthers? Proto? Athearn? Broadway?

Best advice is go to your local hobby shop &/or model RR club & ask alot of questions about the different locos. Look for Yahoo Group forums for each manufacturer and read all the discussions there. You can also type their names in your browser to find even more info. All the ones you listed...

Sergent Couplers - anyone use them?

Posted this on another forum recently: Haven't tried them yet but have only heard good things about Sergent couplers. Here's a couple of sites to look at: http://sergentengineering.com/ http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NdECmydu68M Do a search on this & other sites for Sergents as they have...

Gapless points and run- off points in H0?

In the US your "gapless points" are called "movable frogs". Your "run-off points" are know as a "split rail derail'. Neither is available from any model track maker at least in HO. The split rail would be easy to make by salvaging 2 point rails off a BO switch to make your own. Look in Wikipedia...

    F units and diaphragms.

Amtrak Superliners have high end doors requiring a transition car (usually occupied by the train C&E and OBS crews) that has a single level door on one end to allow access to the baggage car.

    F units and diaphragms.

Diaphragms are/were used between any type of pax cars (e.g. lounge, dinner, sleeper, coach, baggage, RPO) not just between coaches. If the cars & locomotives were on the same level then trainman could walk between engine & cars thru the diaphragms. It doesn't work anymore between modern...

    F units and diaphragms.

Don't think full body width diaphragms were used on locomotives, just on some pax cars by a few RRs.

Here's a topo map of the MET. You can click on the EAST & WEST arrows on the right & left margins to follow the MET to the ATSF (go east) & old SP (go left). To change map scale click on the "+" & "-" in upper left hand corner. To change size of the map click on one of the 3 boxes just outside...

    F units and diaphragms.

American Limited makes diaphragms for a variety of HO F unit manufacturers. They even tell you how to get close coupling. http://www.americanlimitedmodels.com/diaphragms.htm

How do you make the Flageways in Crossings?

Saw on another forum where the modeler used a freight car truck w/ wheels to make the wheel grooves. Easy to do & very little trouble.

    Cattle Car Quandary

By the early 1970s shipment of stock by rail had ended. UPs use of stock cars to carry pigs from NE to CA for Farmer John ended in late 1990s. If your layout is freelance maybe you can come with a similar excuse to keep the cars.

Real railroad workers & model railroading?

Back when I was in BNSF conductor school practically first words out of the instructor's mouth was to bad mouth foamers. A few weeks later saw him get a whole stack of MR mags from another employee. He dropped them & the one on top was "101 Track Plans" by Linn Westcott! Later on met more RRers...

    Have you seen this?

Both crews survived but w/ just some minor injuries. Good thing it was a side swipe & not head on. Same thing happened to an engineer friend but unlike this incident they went beyond the switch. Crew fatigue is a big factor in these types of accidents.
