    Zman's layout progress...pics!

The backside of Merchant's Row is being taken over by that ubiquitous New England invader, Wisteria.

Cornerstone's "Merchant's Row II" - another great model with intricate window detail, a turret tower, and a cupola (which I decided had been recently copper-plated).

A close-up of the iron works. This is an extremely well-crafted model by Con-Cor, the "Cambria City Boiler House." It's actually meant to serve a much larger factory, but due to my space limitations, I'm using it as a stand-alone structure.

    Zman's layout progress...pics!

The signal tower has just routed a 2-6-0 Mogul onto the industrial siding which serves the iron works.

This track plan is an adaptation of a layout in Marty McGuirk's "N Scale Model Railroading." It includes a northern staging area with a small passing track which will eventually be hidden by a low tree-covered ridge, an inside and outside track in the southeast corner, an industrial siding, and...

    NY & NE "White Train"

P.S. Here's an anonymous artist's rendition of the "white train", or the "ghost train" as it became to be known. That looks like a Mogul to me, but who knows it the artist knew for sure?

    Diorama

Looks like a good start. Are you going to add a couple freight cars to the engine?

    NY & NE "White Train"

Here's an interesting article from March 16, 1891 in the Boston Herald. Rolling out of the New York and New England Railroad station at 3 pm yesterday afternoon, the New England Limited took all the glories that could be attached in a complete new train resplendent in white and gold. For three...

Yard and main line plan ideas

If you're modeling the steam-deisel transition era, it gives you the opportunity to use a lot of the different support and maintainence buildings that the different engines required. It could make for a very rich and busy yard, but be sure to leave enough room for all the buildings.

    Laying yard track

Hey CAS, I'm glad to hear that you're an n-scaler and not HO. We don't need their kind 'round these parts. :D

    My newest project...

Technically speaking, Noah's Ark on a railroad layout isn't exactly prototypical. (Said the whiney nerd picking his nose with one hand while fingering his pocket protector with the other.)

    Laying yard track

CAS, I'm assuming that you're using cork roadbed for the mainline. If so, why not continue it into the yard? A number of companies offer wide pieces of cork so that you don't have to lay bed seperately for each spur. Also, what's the nature of your yard? Are there industrial or passenger...

One way to acquire kitbashing pieces...

Hey, CalFlash, what the devil are you talking about? You put an engine in a blender to clean it off?! Is this some kind of ancient Chinese secret, or are you pulling a newbies leg as an April fool's joke?

Does anyone else find nscale.org confusing?

Talk about sensory overload...There's a flashing writhing GIF in every corner of every page. It reminds me of late Baroque architecture where every cornice and gable is adorned with spitting gargoyles framed by layered arabesques. Be that said, I still signed up.

How many Guage members model 19th century?

In any scale or gauge? I'm just curious as I'm a beginner, and have chosen to model late 19th century New England. Any advice, stories, pics would be greatly appreciated.

N Scale Brands - what do you think?

I've only been in the hobby for a few months, but here are my specific recommendations: 1. I use Peco code 55 flextrack. The shorter rails on code 55 track have a more prototypical appearance. 2. My turnouts, motors, and switches are also from Peco. The motors can be buried directly under...

I wonder how much of a big layout I could fit in 10x4ft in Z?

Nice work on the math, tillsbury! Perhaps you should tackle the unified field theory next.:D
