The best model I've ever seen - now I have it!

That thing's just mad! What *were* they thinking... :-) What a great model...

Who or What Got You Started?

It seems sad that many of these start with the same old reasons... Christmas trains, Lionel, and lots of local trains running through towns. Do these things still happen in the US nowadays? In 50 years, how will today's kids remember trains?

    Track plan help

The two loops can be one inside the other (with a crossover if you really want), or just a single loop, in which case you have most of the 5 feet available. On the other end, you have a staircase. Is that going downwards? Can't you go under some of the steps? In which case you may be able to...

    wow, train engines are alot!

Some of the really big G steam is silly money too... a regular exhibitor at the shows here runs a spectacular $2000+ G-scale steamer on a regular basis... Good on him!!

    Operations question

Sorry George, I didn't mean to tell anyone what they had to do on their model railroad. Far be it from me to do such a thing... The poster asked "would the real thing split a unit train" and I answered that question -- very unlikely. Obviously most of us need selective compression to fit stuff...

    Operations question

It's not likely the RR would want coal hanging around in the yard. The yard's supposed to be empty, so that the RR can sort cars in it. It's not a 'storage facility' for the RR's customers. If the power plant tracks can't handle it then I would suspect the full unit train would be dragged...

    sputtering n-scale

Have you got any other locos to check it with? All my Atlas ones do that...

    How much

I suggest you ebay off the locos and rolling stock separately, it looks like you have something like $400 worth there on its own... The layout looks nice, I've seen ones worse than that going up to around $300-400, but remember that you're likely to be limited to quite local customers. Plenty...

A nice Atlas wood reefer ???

I would be seriously impressed if you did that in N... Go for it Will!

    EBay warning... Different!!

Good call. There's obviously something in the air. I had two half-believable phishes in my email in the last month, both of which I forwarded to ebay and turned out to be real (really bogus, that is). I almost never get spam, let alone dodgy stuff. Not seen anything as bad as that, though...

    New structures for the AD&N

Great scene and matching. Some really subtle weathering is called for just to make it perfect. The tank filling station looks so much better from the low angle, doesn't it? If you're going to make structures that nice you should really think about lowering your track profile... (thwack!) ow...

    coupler and truck conversions

Many people swear by metal wheels, saying they keep the track cleaner. I use mainly Kato locos and I don't seem to have the same problem. My Atlas and LL locos are not reliable on clean trackwork and stop dead when it gets a little dirty, so they're just stationary models now. I mostly use MT...

    coupler and truck conversions

There are probably more out there with more experience of longer cars than I. I suggest that it'd only be significant if you had very small radiused curves for the length of car that you intend to use. The problem with truck-mounted couplers is when you are pushing cars (reversing or sorting)...

    coupler and truck conversions

Yes, that's correct, and it's easier. But there will come a time in the not-too-distant future when you get problems (with switching, coupling, uncoupling, and derailing) and want to swap them out for body-mounted couplers. Unless you're a complete butterfingers and are sure you can't do it...

    coupler and truck conversions

I too was confused to bits. No, you don't need all the variations. For the vast majority of locos and rolling stock, you're best off with the 'standard' 1015 body-mounted coupler sets. You can get these assembled in pairs, or (much cheaper) in 10-packs unassembled, in your choice of black or...

    Digitrax Zephyer Question

I can't help thinking I saw a really simple cheap home-brew throttle design for a Zephyr, because it has (in addition to the other interfaces) a weird Zephyr-specific one that you can make a very simple throttle for... I can't find it now though, anyone else remember seeing that? Charles

    Gurus help with track selection..Please

I don't know about HO personally, but Peco code 83 is the new kid on the block that the experts are supposedly raving about. Historically, Peco has had the best track operationally but looked like the UK prototype -- now their new code 83 is US-style track so if you're planning a US layout it's...

    Scenic Ridge

Certainly if you can get a better price it's a great deal. I think the DPM kit is a pretty good deal on its own. You might be able to vary the track -- which could be to your own spec. And, of course, there's no reason why the whole thing can't be a 'module' of your future basement empire, so...

N Scale Layout Plan - Vail and Southwestern for review

How did I miss this? Nice layout -- I'm working on something of a similar size. Stuff that I came across (which of course is not a criticism of your layout, I'm just wondering how you solved them): 1) I'm planning to build the lower level first and the upper level later -- to avoid...
