Meant "trepidation". See, I'm really having fear and trepidation!

    Come along on our adventure

Just a little frustration here, guys. :( We have laid ourselves out here for all of you to see. We have asked for your advice. I know there are so many serious and competent modelers out there who could/SHOULD help us learn and become more competent. We're back to just trying things on our...

    Come along on our adventure

Thanks for the reply J&A. We're leaning heavily toward the angled parking -- does sort of shorten our downtown layout, but I think it is more realistic. I remember Austin and San Antonio, Texas -- most of the roads downtown had angled parking, as you suggest. We're modeling a fictitious town...

    Building Time

TW20, Hi on another thread. We had a similar experience as Robin. The first coat really needs to be full strength, even if it is the same color as the second coat. If you dillute the paint with water to start with it won't coat the plastic thoroughly. You can get around it by letting it dry...

    Come along on our adventure

Thanks for the reply, TW20. Great comment about parallel parking. I haven't striped the road yet (center or shoulder), which I will do shortly and then can put one of our future "for sale" cars in front of the building next door to the auto dealer and see how it looks. Like I'd be pulling up...

    Come along on our adventure

By the way, the buildings are far from finished. We are also thinking about spreading the buildings out a bit -- add a gap in between the car dealership (which according to my kids will have a mercedes gull wing and a shelby cobra for sale -- go figure  ) and the merchants building --...

Here's the buildings set back from the road. You can see the foam bed that would need some sort of treatment.

    Come along on our adventure

Hi all. Need some more advice. Relative to our Main Street through town. We have the road width at 5 1/2 inches, one lane each way. We have several Cornerstone buildings that we are modeling that will go along side the road, and then have another road perpendicular to the first road, forming...

    Railfanning in New Orleans

You and one of my sons have inspired me to get out railranning soon. My second son came home today and told me that he saw a BNSF and a Santa Fe (new silver and red) crossing nearby. I'm going to the UP yards this weekend to see what I can see. If I get as lucky as you, I'll post some...

Night shot of the industrial area

I'm the same way with our layout. I want it to be somewhat accurate to the period we are modeling -- late 1960s early 1970s, but am not really hung up that on everything being prototypical. I certainly respect those modelers who are adamant about every detail being correct -- I wish I knew...

Its MONDAY 2-21-05, weekend modeling accomplishments!

Finished main street on our layout (the actual road itself, not everything on the road). Removed the tape from all the rails and made sure everying still ran. Corrected some track problems and ran trains for a while. Realized I had a weight problem with some of my rolling stock. Seems...

    Come along on our adventure

Spitfire, Thanks for the advice. This is exactly why I want to review these decisions on the-gauge. I can always try the finer ballast material as you suggest. Do you think the light grey ballast material will make an attractive gravel bed with enough interest? Should I mix some darker...

    Looking for DCC system..

Connor, We recently acquired the Atlas Commander DCC unit. Why? A couple of reasons which I am sure are open to debate. 1). Cost -- We were able to obtain the Atlas commander and power pack for about $115 total. This is quite a bit off their MSRP. Never pay MSRP. 2). The Atlas can handle...

    Come along on our adventure

One more activity. When we were in the LHS, we were looking for some benches to go on our train station platform. The LHS guy showed us some Woodland Scenics park benches. I said that I wanted something a bit longer, and before the words left my mouth my older son said, "No prob, Dad. I'll...

    Railfanning in New Orleans

Nolatron, This is a great picture for prototyping a rail line. Look at the ground cover around the rails -- that is certainly something you could model! I love to see the UP running!

    Come along on our adventure

OK guys. Need some advice. We are going to lay the gravel bed around the gravel plant soon. I went to the LHS and asked what product to use for the gravel around the plant. Here's what we are planning. The gravel company obviously has a gravel road and gravel all around the plant...

    Come along on our adventure

Trainwhiz20, Please, don't feel that you were being rude at all -- I agree that the mountain had visible lines of foam and appreciate your comment. Your comment facilitated Interurban's advice which is exactly what we needed. Since this is our first railroad, we are happy for all the...

    Come along on our adventure

Ralph, thanks for the feedback. We're particulary happy with the gravel works. We have a lot of work to do to finish off the ground level with gravel, and add some working machines (front end loaders), etc. Will keep you all posted.

Night shot of the industrial area

Eddie, wow that is awesome. Quick question -- is the lighting all on or all off, or is it variable? If variable, what do you use to control it? I have probably missed it by being relatively new to the-gauge, but what is your overall layout that this is a part of?? What else is in your...

    Railfanning in New Orleans

Wow ! Great photos. I love to see the UP's and BNSF's -- just what I am modeling. You were able to get really close to those diesels -- must have really rumbled. I agree with you -- the picture with the silhouet is awesome -- sometimes I spend so much time working with models that I forget...
