    Yard switching

By the way, can you guys suggest some reading material that might help me with railroad operations and some of the terminology. The thing I really appreciate is having you guys give me the real terminology used in the yards versus the "textbook" terminology I might find otherwise. Your...

    Yard switching

David and Greg, Thanks so much for the replies and the tutorial on terminology. I'm still learning. :) What I saw was exactly as you stated. The guy on the ground was working a radio, I assume talking to the engineer on the locomotive. He did ride one of the "cuts" down the rail, presumably...

    Yard switching

Thanks guys. This was an amazing thing to see. I've never seen this type of yard activity. Tileguy, I think you nailed it. ;) These cars were kicked off the end of the loco and it was really like a lagging exercise -- there was rolling stock parked all over the various rails -- these guys...

Greg, thanks so much for the post. :thumb: That sounds exactly like what they were doing -- kicking the cars off the end. This yard area is very flat, but it amazed me how much speed the cars had going off the end of the locomotive. They moved down the rail with quite a bit of energy...

    Yard switching

I have been posting our modeling adventure in the HO forum and posting some pics in the Photography forum, but a recent experience made me want to re-post some items here to see if I can get some perspective from some of you operations folks. This past weekend, I went to a local yard and saw...

And here is the UP yard office where all of this was taking place. Sorry for the stupid question, but is this how all yard switching works? I always thought that they would back the cars up into position, unhook, then move forward, switch tracks, back the cars up into position, unhook them...

:D Wah HOOOOOO!! :D :D :D :D :D :D Cropped and zoomed image! Sure can see more detail! :thumb: :thumb: Thanks Spitfire for your advice -- worked like a charm. By the way, here is a view of the switch ( a different one than the guy was throwing) -- never been this close to one.

Spitfire, Thanks so much. I am trying your method (I think). :) Here is what I have done -- Used Photoshop to zoom into the image, then croped it, then saved it, then downsized it. I'll post here and hopefully it will come out looking like the zoomed image. Keep your fingers crossed. :D

I'm using Photoshop. You can do some modifying using the standard programs that come with some of HP's printers, but you just can't beat Photoshop for functionality.

Saw some really fun activity down at the yard today. A very large grouping of UP engines were hooked up to a relatively small number of cars and were moving up and down the rail switching the cars onto various tracks. I've never seen this type of operation before -- the engine group...

Here are a couple more. By the way, the neon looking sign is actually lit up -- that's not just painted. Kids think that is pretty cool.

    Come along on our adventure

Well, here is how it turned out. :D I had to do some rework on the asphalt area to smooth it out and get it level up to the building area. My second son worked hard on the Diner and got the wiring done so you can see it light up. :thumb: I'll post some pictures here of the almost...

    Come along on our adventure

We've been working on the areas behind the main street buildings. We decided to add a Diner and make the ground asphalt. First step was to mark off the buildings then paint the foam bed and add the asphalt. We're using Woodlands Scenics "Cinder" ground cover -- Painted the undersurface then...

Unfortunately, no. We've got company coming in for a visit, so we'll have to stay put. Hope you and Andrew have a great time! Let us know how it went. Take pics if possible.

Some of you may have been wondering why I've been sitting on the hood of my cobra at the car dealership all these days -- well, when you are in a small town, sometimes you just have to wait for the new stuff to roll in.
