    Atlas Nscale GP-38 Electrical glitch?

Do you know if the GP-38 is supposed to have directional lighting? I am trying to understand if the light is on when it should be off (not enough insulation) or if it is off when it should be on (not enough connection). They are two different situation and might require two different solutions.

    New Desktop Layout

Nice. I am impressed at the length of the train you are able to pull up the hill.

    Making Roads

The plaster and flex foam looks good Josh, I like the easy cracks. For you other guys that use shingles, what scale do you model in? I am in N and I am not sure if it would scale down as well. Thanks for your input

    Making Roads

I have been putting this off for a long time on my layout and was hoping I would get some inspiration from you guys! I want to have asphalt roads probably. It is for an industrial area. What type of material to do you use to model roads? Any tricks, etc. that you use when modeling them? Thanks!

Ebay and custom weathered rolling stock

Personally I would not pay extra on eBay for weathering. I normally look for bargains and then put the time in detailing it myself. But there may be people who would. I think I saw someone once offering a "weathering service" on there a while ago. Basically you would send them a car, they...

Ok, makes sense. Thanks for the explanation!

    My second layout

Wow you have a lot of tracks there. I was curious about the way you designed your yards. I see you have a separate one for each side of the mainline, but then within each one there also seems to be different areas. For example the orange yard has the horizontal spurs at the bottom, a large...

Opinions on a 4x8 roundy rounder

I agree. Recently I actually removed some tracks from my layout to make room for more scenery, and am much happier since I didn't really use the extra track anyway. You mentioned Shays in your earlier post, are you doing a logging layout? Maybe make the whole layout the side of a mountain...

    Un-gluing stuff...

I had a similar situation: cork roadbed attached to plywood with wood glue. I didn't think to soak it and just went at it with a putty knife. It took me a little while but I got it up (along with a few bits of plywood). I now use latex caulk to hold down my roadbed and track. It has enough...

Mini cam in a "See" Liner

Awesome. I was impressed with the video camera, and then was floored by the control stand. Very nice.

    Curve Woes

Yes it could have been grease. I put a little bit in there a while ago and hadn't run it that much. Hopefully it stays running smooth.

    Curve Woes

Well I ran the engine some more and either it is crazy or I am. I was trying to get some more insight by running the engine differently, fast, slow, forward, reverse while paying attention to the different things you guys had mentioned. I would see the problem one way, switch to the other way...

    Curve Woes

Thanks for your input, Robert, Yes the layout is in N scale. I have a Bachmann GP-50 and an Atlas UB-25 that are about the same size and navigate the curves ok. 9.75 in. is the normal minimum radius in N scale. I was hoping it was not the curves since there isn't much I can do about them...

    Curve Woes

While running my Atlas GP-35 around my layout I noticed that is slows down significantly, to almost a crawl sometimes, going around the curves ( radius = 10 in. ), even when not pulling any cars. It runs fine on straight track. None of my other engines have this problem so I don't think it...

    Bamboo skewers.

I model in N scale and use rounded toothpicks. Works just like the skewer.

Brown or black for wheels and/or couplers?

I don't think they look that much worse then black, but then I haven't done much weathering of my equipment. I actually just ordered some couplers and on a whim decided to get them in brown so I am hoping I won't be disappointed. What color would brand new prototype couplers be? An metallic grey?

    weathered switcher and cars

Neat. What did you use to weather them? I like the hopper, it looks really good. The engine and box car look dirty, but almost too uniformly dirty. I liked how the hopper seemed a little dirtier at the ends around the wheels.

    Internet Vendors

I have not had a great experience with Internet Trains either. My order status was stuck in limbo for two weeks (they claim to ship in 7-10 days). I emailed customer service about it. That seemed to move my order along and it shipped out a few days later. I am waiting for it to arrive (in...
