How Do You Name Your Railroads?

First, I wanted to do something in the era of the old west. Second, when I thought about a name for my cowtown, Tombstone and Redemption were taken so I came up with Defiance. I was watching BTTF III and all the stereotypical bad western movies came to mind. The deal clincher was Mrs. Doc's...

    Old west prarie layout engine

Welcome to the Gauge. I'm also modeling the Old West, but in HO. Overall, there aren't too many of us modeling that era. One word of caution, from my limited experience, the old tyme steamers don't have that mcuh pulling power. Doc

How do I make homade snow dust?

Sometime in the very recent past I saw a forum thread on how one guy did it. Looked fabulous. He sprays the layout with a fine mist of water and then uses a flour sifter to sprinkle plaster of paris over the portions of the layout he wanted to be snowed in. After the plaster layers he added...

    cheap vehicles

I'm modeling 1880 so they don't really work for me. I did pick up a five pack just to get the Lamborgini. The rest go to a buddy. I've been looking for an HO scale Delorean to hide in a mine. I figure if I paint it silver and add a flux capacitor, nobody will know the difference if all they...

    Advice on Good window materials...

For frosted windows, I used the tops from yogurt containers. Mrs. Doc loves the stuff so I have an endless supply. For clear I use sheets of acetate like Tom does. For industrial blind I use masking tape on the inside. For residential structures I often san and reduce pictures of drapes from...

    Dirty wheels on old steamer

I use a rotary tool with a plastic bristle brush head dipped in alcohol. The plastic won't scratch or pit like brass. Doc

Started Scenery on the BAD Western

I bought the two Bachmanns on the cheap on ebay. I'll probably spring for an IHC after the first of the year unless Santa brings me one. I'll post more pics as I get more done but I'm not finding much time to work on the layout these days. If you haven't already done so, you can click on my...

Started Scenery on the BAD Western

Thanks for the link, looks like a cool layout! I've looked and asked for blue or pink foam at both HD's as well as at Lowe's without any luck. Finnaly went with the white stuff. Bummer. Doc

Started Scenery on the BAD Western

Thanks for the thought about the tiles. I've got a case which shouyld last me awhile. Not sure if I'm gonna do the whole thing that way or not. I've only been here about 10 years so I don't know Grossman's. I asked Roger about his homosote and he said he'd had it fo a long time, didn't...

Started Scenery on the BAD Western

I'm modeling in HO. I've seen Hminky's website and his 440 upgrade. He does some prety good stuff. I'm not at the point I want to go and disect my enginees though. I'm using ceiling tiles for a couple of reasons. First I got a whole case free from a contractor I know. I've seen it used...

Started Scenery on the BAD Western

Thanks for the kind words. I appreciate the feedback. Dick, you're right about my engines having trouble going through switches. I've got plans to upgrade their pick-up capacity but it's a long way off. Doc

    Lookin' fer ideas...

I would love to get into geocaching. Sounds like a blast. Not exactly model railroad (as opposed to the real thing), but how 'bout a wooden train whistle. They can be picked up relatively inexpensively. Other items like a box car kit or small structure kit come to mind. Doc

Started Scenery on the BAD Western

I finally took the plunge and started some scenery using ceiling tiles for rock formations. I've gotta long way to go but it sure is nice to have something other than white foam to look at.:thumb: Doc
