    Strange Boxcar!!

My sincere thanks to both of you. This box car is a 40' Illinois Central , have no clue who made it as I didn't get it in its orignal box. I'll put it away in a safe place. Bob

    Strange Boxcar!!

Actually it appears quite possible that a rubber band could have been threaded down to the axle. As I look more closely at the axle the metal wheel is on I see a notched area where the rubber band might have gone. Tell me again why you would have something like thisballoon6 in a box car...

    Strange Boxcar!!

I have a couple of old boxcars I bought off e-Bay some time back and am just now getting around to checking couplers, wheel sets, etc. I could see inside one of them that there is a wheel inside, so I opened it up to check it out. Sure enough a well balanced metal wheel, about an inch and a half...

    Wheels

Thanks Joe. I'll try to remember if I every decide to light the interiors. Right now I'm just working to get my layout up and operational. Have all the mainline in and wired and also the yard, but still have all the roadbed and track work to do on several spurs as well as the lead to the...

    Wheels

What really makes it interesting is that the heavyweights I am talking about hare three axle trucks and all three axles have a metal wheeel on the same end. But the other truck which also has one metal wheel on each axle has them reversed in terms of the track they rest on

    Wheels

I noticed that on some passenger cars I have that there is a plastic wheel on one end of the axle and a metal one on the other end. Is this in case I want to add lighting to the interior of the cars? Bob

    Wheels

Is there a reason I should be considering putting metal wheels on those pieces of rolling stock I have acquired that still have plastic ones? What makes the difference. Oh, eventually I'll be running DCC :thumb: Bob

    DCC Compatible

Hi Woodie. Good to hear from you. I will pull the machine apart one of these days and take a look to see how it is put together. If I can't convert it I'll figure out a way to trade with someone who runs DC. I'm off to Tucson, AZ in a couple of days to enjoy some of their warmth and...

    DCC Compatible

Received an Athearn SD40-2 "Post '80 "Q" Fans (HO scale) for Christmas. Haven't tried to open it and thought before I did I would ask here whether or not it will accept a decoder? Thanks and Merry Christmas Bob

    Wiring Loop

Ethernet? Come on, give me a break. I'm an old man. I 've heard the word, but haven't a clue how it applies to this conversation. You need to use small words if you want me to understand. I told you I was creatively challenged   :p :p

    Wiring Loop

Gary, I understand. I have it all wired for DC right now. Just did a test run and two trains work just great   Will I have the opportunity to do some railfanning in Tucson? :) Bob

    Wiring Loop

Gary, we're on the same sheet of music. I wasn't planning to cut anything until I determine that it won't work. Setting up DC for grandkids coming tomorrow was easier for me than getting out the Digitrax and hooking it up. I may be wrong, but it seems right to me   Bob

    Wiring Loop

Thanks very much Jim. I'll take some time and look over the site carefully. Where in AZ do you hang your hat. My wife and I are going to stay in Tucson for the month of January. As cold as its been here the past few weeks I can't get there soon enough!! Bob

    Wiring Loop

Thanks again Jeff. For whatever reason the wiring aspect of model railroading still baffles me. I can lay track and build hills and do all that stuff, but the concepts of wiring, either DC or DCC seem to be beyond my abilities to comprehend. Gary Pfeil knows how I struggled with the idea of...

    Wiring Loop

Thanks to all of you. It almost sounds like I could set up the loop to run DC and then when I am ready to hook up my DCC I just need to g9o to the far end of the layout and snip the buss at that point. I then have two separate leads from my loconet?? Am I the one who is loco? Bob

    Wiring Loop

Thanks Andrew, I see what you are saying. I'll give it a go and see if anything melts   Bob

    Wiring Loop

I have a 6' X 12' layout. I am working on the wiring. Can I create an actual loop with the buss wire and then tap in the power to that loop? Will the same situation work (or not work) for both DC and DCC?  Thanks Bob

    Edging/Facia

Again, my thanks to all of you for a couple of great ideas, not the least of which is not to put it on too early. I have been busy filling cracks between the foam board with light spackle and when I finish that will begin the track laying process. I figure that just before I am ready to scenick...

    Edging/Facia

I'm wondering that if I use masonite I might be able to get the local lumber company to strip a sheet around the edges that would give me about 2 eight foot sections and 2 three foot sections if I had it cut to create a 6" high piece. I could get all I need out of two sheets that way. Great...
