Mixing old and new model trains?

I run them both---but---as you've noted, it takes a bit of patience and tinkering as ne'er the two shall meet without it... My 40 year old side dump gets pulled regularly in 35+ car trains with my... ....2 year old Atlas high ender...

    Accurail Switchman

I just use one of those sandwich toothpicks---the kind with the colored cellophane fright wig---just point it in between the two couplers and give it a clockwise twist. Pretty slick and, at $1 for 50 of them, very affordable---and---it works in both HO and N scale.

    Baltimore trip

Sigh...my home town...wish I could be there. I haven't seen it since before the roof collapsed after a good snow some years back. Enjoy yourself, it is well worth a trip---and don't forget to try to stop by M.B.Kliens, they have quite a hobby shop that's not far from the Inner Harbor.

    Rivarossi Disaster!

What I ended up doing in my Cab Forward was to break it into three peices then glue them together with JB Weld. Once together, I filed it to shape and painted it with a heavy coat of paint. It's worked fine ever since though, like you said, I could now make a mold of it to cast from later.

    Rivarossi Disaster!

But first...you have to get over the shock:eek::thumb: My near mint Marklin HO tinplate 346/1 coach was recently found with a spot of it on one wheel...sigh...wall1 At least it's only the one wheel, it's still in one piece and there is no sign of it anywhere else.:thumb:

    Rivarossi Disaster!

It's a malady affectionately referred to as "Zinc-mites" or "Zinc pest" among old train collectors. It's a crystallization caused by the poor quality of zinc used and is aggravated by humidity and temperature. Thought to be dealt with at one time, Rivarossi brought it back for some of their...

CODE 100 or CODE 83 TRACK

AS Ed pointed out, you likely don't have the older equipment that C100 rail was made for. With that in mind, I'd recommend C83 rail as it has a much more scale profile. I prefer C100 for two reasons; price, as most folks don't care for it now so it's usually a bargain at train shows. The...

    Rivarossi Disaster!

Ouch, sorry to hear that. I did a thread here some years back on a similar fix. Mine had warped and so I broke it in three places then pieced it back using JB Weld. Works like a charm, so much so that I haven't bothered looking for a replacement which, as you've pointed out, is a crap shoot...

What made you realize model trains were more than just toys?

Aye, but a very cool one. It was built for me by an online friend as part of a model exchange. It's fully detailed inside and out and lit up like a Christmas tree. The name was a playful poke at me, I'm an LSU fan, he a faithful---if not somewhat disappointed---Buckeye fan. A great reminder...

What made you realize model trains were more than just toys?

When I walked into my first hobby shop, M.B. Klein's in Baltimore. They had a showcase near the front door full of locomotives. One stood out in particular, Rivarossi's SP Cab Forward, at the princely sum of $89.99. The detail was amazing to me at the time, the silver band across the...

    AHM/Riverossi Wheelsets?

Ray's right, that is a common boo boo with Rivarossis and others like them where the wheelsets are easily turned around. I have spare axles but not the grounded type in that diameter.

    AHM/Riverossi Wheelsets?

:thumb::thumb::thumb: I pondered doing that back in the 80s, too. Just couldn't bring myself to do it---like cutting scale flanges on 027 Lionel...perish the thought....though I'm not above remotoring them and putting DCC in them, go figure ;)

    AHM/Riverossi Wheelsets?

Owww, ooooo, ouch...knavish verbal sprayings of the Kato and Atlas generation. Such words would never come from the mouth of old school modelers:mrgreen::mrgreen::mrgreen: How could a generation be raised whose hearts do not pitter patter at the sight of AHM/Rivarossi steam, who spoke of...
