    Shipyard's 1:96 HMS ALERT

This ship will be the death of me. After polishing of the cute fishing cutter Selma and an up scale of Digital Navy's V108 I have returned and have settled down to some fine details before the rigging starts! Sorry the picture is a bit poor and does not do the subject justice, the big...

Victorian battleships and steamships..can anyone help?

Hi Rosie HMS Warrior, that would be a dream come true. In fact I cannot believe there isn't one already! Drawings seem scarce. HMS Warrior is an impressive vessel, more so since one can visit the Mary Rose and HMS Victory in the same day at Portsmouth's Historic Dockyard. Royal Navy's...

    Digital Navy - USS Arizona - 1/100

Mmmmm nice props. We have had a few nice props of late, these are the biggest! My offering was the smallest... but same scale. D

    FlyModel K-141 Kursk

Hi JJ, Very very very cool props - real Hunt for Red October stuff (making appropriate Hollywood noise - "wo wo wo wo"). What s the problem with the railings... would thread and CA glue method not work? D

    Krakus Build Thread

Superb! Did the cyano glue fumes make your eyes water? Makes mine stream. Last time I did railings I drew up a template in Illustrator copied it a few times and and stuck the printed sheet to the frame. Thus one can have scale railings to the exact pattern of the prototype. As a man who...

    Krakus Build Thread

I am interested in all things wavey and was thinking about a paddle wheeler! So you got me twice! Not sure I like the butting former arrangement in the hull. Is there a good reason for it? D

    Digital Navy's "new" V108

Hi Llewlyn, I did! I reckon a nominal 1:150ish scale. I have about three things to do and she's finished. What can I say, this is a great kit, and as first one I reckon we made the right choice! Good to see the triangles are there, the full hull version requires a whole lot of those. I guess...

Yeah, which island are you trying to escape from in a paper boat?

    Hull and Deck framing

I agree with Yug. Use the material you feel comfortable with. But for all its failings in some applications card is very useful and flexible although patience is often required (insert appropriate swearing). After many years of stick and tissue modelling I was glad to escape balsa! But I do...

    Mac Users?

Hey a Mac group, gotta join in this.... I am no expert but I am sure I am more relaxed on my Mac. We have a regular museum here. An SE30 (top of the range 1989 style, still runs!) A blueberry G3 ibook, 15 inch ibook, G4 ibook and and a MacBook... Oddly all very small computers which fit or...

    Shipyard's 1:96 HMS ALERT

Sadly not a lot of progress. A holiday week spent on lots of family cycling and building Peanut scale free flight in Depron foam. They fly! Still a little movement on the Alert. The register for the port sea monster is off so he almost, but not quite, runs of the edge of the printed...

    Shipyard's 1:96 HMS ALERT

Planking; well Le Coureur, the second part of this kit issue is also clinker built. I don't know about the others published by Shipyard. The clinker build technique does have a certain character and a lot of texture. However, I have to admit I have no idea why these "little" ships were clinker...

    Shipyard's 1:96 HMS ALERT

Little bit more progress on the hull front. The gap between covering pieces 6 and 8 was a little dicey but it was clear that the next set of hull parts would fit as intended. The middle paper covering pieces are printed with the positions for the final planking and the clinker planking was a...

    Shipyard's 1:96 HMS ALERT

This was Gorilla Filler, but it seemed to be the same product as other foam filler I have used around the house. My hull formers are as close to the 1 mm or 1.5 mm called for by the kits instructions as I could manage. Bitter experience there. Be careful if you deviate! For card supplies I...

    Shipyard's 1:96 HMS ALERT

I bought a can of foam filler from my local bargain store, I filled the hull I left it to set for a week or so. It is very easy, there is no magic. Cutting and sanding requires patience but we are building card models so patience is not a problem! D

    Shipyard's 1:96 HMS ALERT

Well Folks, I have been working away quietly on this all the long wet summer... This is the traditional paper and card kit at 1:96, not the larger 1:72 laser cut kit Marta has ben describing. My copy came from http://www.boatmodelling.com and includes Le Coureur, which will be built...

    Hull Plating on Japanese Warships

Dear John, I will stick my neck out, but confess I really only know a very little about British ship construction. I am sure Japanese shipyards followed standard and trusted practice of the day, comprising riveted overlapping plates (joggled?) on un-armoured areas. The armour plate plate...
