    Bachmann 2-8-0

According to the guy who did the 1:20.3 Bachmann to K-27 conversion, all you need is a dremel. I figure since the 1:20.3 Bachmann 2-8-0 is the exact same build as the On30 version, so I should be alright just using my dremel. I have a vague idea in my mind of how I'd do it - take off the cab...

    progress on my layout

This is a difficult one. You could actually uproot the tracks and move them so that they're further apart. If it was me (and this is just me talking here) I would want at least a natural grass slope on the inclines... I'd be happy with a concrete reinforced wall on the straight bits, but I...

    Wondering about narrow gauge HO

That depends on what N scale stuff you modify. A Bachmann Plymouth 0-6-0 costs around 26 bucks, but a Lifelike switcher chassis with it's dual flywheels will set you back a lot more, around about $30 more. The same goes for On30 - some things cost around $20 (like the ever popular model power...

There is no attitude, what I posted was intended as a friendly poke, don't take things so seriously. Also, what's this about me not knowing anything? I'll have you know that I pride myself in knowing everything thankyou very much! :thumb:

So yours is basically the same as mine but you've removed a lot more of the trackwork than I did. That's fair enough, it was rather crowded. At least you'll have more room for industries and things. I'd say go ahead and do it, I can't see any reason why it wouldn't work so long as you're only...

    Lester Perry challenge one

If you don't like evergreen try slaters plastikard, they make corrugated plastic sheet that's ideal for a project like this.

Elevated eh? How elevated are we talking... an inch? a foot? Obviously a foot isn't going to be possible... I'll tell you what I think about what's possible from just looking at the photos... I'd say you could maybe get 1.5 to 2.5 inches of elevation, tops. The outer loop on the left hand side...

    Lester Perry challenge one

I believe either plastruct or slaters make corrugated embossed styrene sheet. Some spans of 2 x 2mm strip across the roof ought to give you the support you need for you to then place the corrugated sheet down as a roof.

Hmm, the only thing I can see wrong with that is you've maybe got your embankments a little bit too close to the tracks... from experience, railway builders in real life seem to usually like to leave about 6 foot or so between the edge of the sleepers and the bottom of the bank. Having said...

    Help with cutting sheet styrene

I do a heck of a lot of scratchbuilding, in fact, most of my modelling seems to be scratchbuilding or kitbashing of some sort. What I have found in all my years of experience is that firstly, plastic quality matters. Plastikard sheet for instance will give a clean, non-grained cut, where as...

    Unknown railway needs identifying!

Recently I've been desperately trying to cast my mind back to watching a TV programme documentary about a railway in Africa (I think) that was still running steam locos. The railway used outside framed Henschels, Alcos and Baldwins, similar in appearance and general layout to D&RGW K-27s...

I'm referring to the On30 model. Not being nasty or anything but, I posted this thread in the On30 forum for a reason.

Come on guys, at least one of you must know about this... where's that guy who said he had something like three of four of the things?

    Bachmann 2-8-0

I'm interested in buying one of these. Under normal circumstances I'd just go right ahead and buy it, then when I get it I'd figure out what I want to do to it. However, I understand that it is mostly made of metal, and at $180 to $210 a piece I think I'd like to know what I'm dealing with...

    Cider Press - shaygetz help?!

This sounds like a pretty good idea to me. If you wanted wood grain you could rough it up (in the direction of the grain of course) with some 50 grit sandpaper. Once painted in a base color (white), it can then be given a wash of (black) paint which will sink into the grain - wiped off with a...

    Full size oil rig?

When semi-submerisible oil platforms (the moveable kind you describe) are out at sea doing their job, they lower them down into the ocean quite some way to stabilise them, lowering their center of gravity and using their weight to keep them from turning over. When they're floating up on their...

    Wondering about narrow gauge HO

I hate to say it but it probably wasn't a good idea to build your layout like that. You'll find it hard to reach the center. Many people jigsaw out the center of their board so that they can stand in the middle. In my opinion the classic beginner mistake is to have an oval, for the very reason...
