Idea for Ballasting; Wondering Will it Work

Is it a true statement that in the prototype world the ballast is used as a bed for the ties and track? If so, I was wondering if this would work out OK. When I lay my track on top of the roadbed (HO) and then ballast, I get a really thin layer between the ties, and sometimes you can see...

My Second Attempt - Long and Rambling

Fred: Thanks for the advice. Now that I am aware of the possible issue, I sould not ever run into it (yeah right). As I have always said, Once is a learning experience. Twice is a mistake. The third time is plain utter stupidity!

My Second Attempt - Long and Rambling

Triplex, I sit corrected  . You are correct about the #4's. I am using all Custom Line Turnouts, so therefore, the minimum turnout should be #4.5.

My Second Attempt - Long and Rambling

David: The area "A" is currently 27" wide. I think that adding another track might mess with my reach across the bench and into the corner. I thought about putting one on the inside of "A", but then it would be too close to the main line I feel. I am a big fan of O. Winston Link; his works are a...

My Second Attempt - Long and Rambling

My Second Layout Attempt - Any Thoughts Hello all again  . For those of you who know me, it looked like progress on my layout dropped off the face of the earth. There was just something I didn't like about it, and luckily, I hadn't made so much progress that I couldn't stop. I have...

Question of the week: Dec 18-22 Your Christmas plans

Herc, Yes sir I will be visiting TLCCS during that week. It is too bad that I live 40 mins. away; that must be why I am always broke.

    Caulk?

Mason, I think we have all been there before. At least you used it on your layout; I used it around the door frame in the kitchen and wondered why no paint would stick. . . .

Question of the week: Dec 18-22 Your Christmas plans

My last day of work for this year is this Friday balloon6 . I will hopefully be able to start on my new layout next week. I know I'll be going to Spencer one day to spend the Christmas loot. The wife has to work, so I get an entire week to myself! Look out train room, here I come!

    Caulk?

I use two types, white and clear. The white is all purpose for attaching anything. I use the clear under my track to attach to the roadbed. It goes on white, but dries clear. A little ballast over top, and you're done.

track bed on top of the foam?

I think the white latex is suitable for painting. I do know that the clear stuff will not hold the paint. I used clear to hold the track to the roadbed, and the white to secure everything else.

track bed on top of the foam?

Jasbourre and others: The latex caulk is great. I went to Lowe's and got the tube of NailPower Foam Board Adhesive to glue the foam to the plyboard. That stuff rocks! Just give it time to dry correctly. It is a solid as a rock now. I also am using the DAP Kwik Seal Tub, Shower, Sink, and...

Don't laugh too hard...It's my first attempt!

Steve, All I can say is WOW jawdrop !!!! That is going to be one awesome scene. So I have a question for you; which way is that scene pointed? Is it the first thing you see when you come in? My new plans call for a viaduct spanning the river as the opening scene to my room. The first...

Don't know what these are called

The may be called door cushions. We have them as well on our loading docks. At just below deck level, there are bumpers, which the trucks back into. The cushions surround the door and also keep the trucks from backing into the building. I think they are also helpful with keeping the elements...

Don't laugh too hard...It's my first attempt!

Steve, Your work continues to astound me! Everything looks great and I really like the new viaduct. Was that the 150' or 210' kit? You know, I haven't seen a wooden yardstick like that since I was in first grade; the music teacher used to have a pink one that she would pop the crap out of...

    uh oh

Just remember, Dogs have owners, cats have staff. My 15 pound fuzzball is too fat, and way to lazy to jump on the layout (48" is about 40" out of his reach). He just lays on the floor in the mess of plastic bags. Jeffrey is right about the hair; I rescued my 20+ year old geep, and when I...

I found the Library of Congress stuff today as well. Lots of good railroad maps, and you can download them if you can open a JPEG2000. It's been rather slow today at work. . .

Forum Clinic? Why, yes. Galen: I would be all for it. Your wisdom and insight that you have provided to The Gauge community is greatly appreciated. You have even gotten me to rethink my whole operational schema (thanks buddy  ), and it is driving me and my wife crazy (well mostly...

    Backdrops and Relief Structures

I guess I should have said I'm in HO. Could I get away with 3.5" on a straightaway?

    Backdrops and Relief Structures

How much room do you leave from the edge of the backdrop and the centerline of the closest track? Is there a minimum "rule of thumb" as to how deep to make your relief structures? I am working on a plan now that is going to have backdrops and relief structures as industries. Thanks
