My Work Bench and storage room, what I am up to

Nice set of Geeps! I've enjoyed your thread since it began. Your worktable looks very much like mine, and judging by the number of boxes, I would say your collection exceeds mine by a little. Like you, I enjoy tinkering and my favorite place to pick up 'tinker toys' are the model trains show...

    Kato-like Switcher

Check the Athearn SW1000 coming out this April. http://www.athearn.com/Search/Default.aspx?SearchTerm=SW1000+RTR&CatID=THLD&PageSize=18 It is very similar with the exception that it is lettered "Burlington" on the hood sides.

Train jumping fixed track! Need Help!

I love these puzzles! Given: ALL the locos jump the track; track and wheelsets have been gauged; and an assumption on my behalf is that the derailment occurred before the soldered rails just ahead of the loco. In this "S" curve, 24 inch radius ought to be adequate. So, unless my stigmatism...

Rivarossi Cab-Forward I have a complete customized Cab-Forward body shell and I need a motorized undercarriage for it. Hmmmm...

    Elevated Structure ...

Vancouver Skytrain I feel very fortunate to live near Vancouver, British Columbia where elevated trains continue to pave the way towards the future. Most residents prefer the elevated rail over surface street light rail. I use the Skytrain often since it is quick, efficient, and frequent. I can...

Oldies but Goodies. The Old Stuff.

ATHEARN Crane Here is an ATHEARN Crane that I've had for about fifty years which is riding on a pair of ATHEARN sprung six-wheel Buckeye trucks. I'll be keeping my fingers crossed for another fifty years that the trucks don't develope the dreaded "ZAMAC disease." I had another pair of trucks...

Oldies but Goodies. The Old Stuff.

My favorite "oldie" is the Aristo-Craft Thomas Rogers mogul (2-6-0) which I bought around 1960. I recently repainted the boiler and cab, and did an overall cleanup. Then I replaced the tender trucks and added a Kadee coupler. With a little La Belle grease and oil, the loco runs as good as new.

    Can't beat that price

I have to admit that the Proto 1000 RDCs are a bargain. I have been collecting enough Athearn parts to complete two RDCs, but I've scrapped that project ever since I bought the Proto 1000 RDCs. They are nicely detailed and are the CORRECT LENGTH unlike Athearn. The Protos are also very smooth...

    A Time to Spend

Those are two handsome C&O locomotives. I'll bet you are glad you didn't hold on to your money a moment longer! Now, gentlemen, its time to put a 'wish-list' together for the 'Economic Stimulus' checks the President-elect has promised. Remember: to stimulate the economy, we are supposed to...

    New Metal PRR catenary structures

WOW!!! Its not only the initial installation of the overhead that is over my head, but how much more difficult everyday maintenance must be. I can't imagine how anyone could reach onto those tracks to re-rail a car or loco without snagging and bringing down all of that delicate overhead. My...

    Picture Problem

There is a software program supplied with each digital camera that, among many other things, allows you to re-size your photos. I can't tell you where to find and how to use this feature since every software program is different. You may have to hunt for the resizing feature, but its there...

    Limited Editions Passenger Car Kits

Over the course of several years I managed to acquire all of the Limited Edition kits necessary for a complete Southern Pacific Daylight train. These kits were produced around 25 years ago and sold by Walthers. My set includes the baggage-coach, coach, tavern car, articulated coach, 3-car...

Until when did the EMD FTs remained visible?

Mike, I bought these locos years ago when the Bachman running gear was rather funky. I had to replace them with Athearns. The shell straddled the frame okay, but didn't lock in place, so I kept them in place with a few drops of Walther's GOO which is a semi-permanent rubber-like adhesive. It...

Until when did the EMD FTs remained visible?

I have always thought the Santa Fe FTs were an attractive group which stand out against the later and more popular F7s. Here is a set of FTs I built many years ago painting and detailing old Bachman shells and a Cary B unit shell. The running gear is all Athearn; only the first two units are...

    A Time to Spend

Buying locos TODAY is the SECOND best time to buy them. YESTERDAY would have been the best time. I recall when a brass LMB Union Pacific 4-12-2 that was selling for $129 in the old days. I thought it was way too much to spend. (I paid many times more than that for a used one later on.)...

    Mantua 0-6-0 trouble

Micheal, You mentioned that the loco was "lunging and slowing down when the crank pins reach certain positions." That also suggests lunging and slowing down with each wheel rotation. Since I make it a practice to fix the easiest part of the problem first, why don't you check the fit between...

Oiling rods & drivers on brass steamers

Heath, I would avoid putting any lubricant on the side rods or valve gear. These joints don't require lube since they are not weight bearing surfaces and there is no friction to contend with. Most valve gear is almost too loose! Not so with axle bearings and drive train gears which require...
