    Ebay - Glory Days Gone?

So I've been a long-time Ebay buyer (and occasional seller). Over the past 6 months, I've noticed that I find less and less worth buying. Perhaps the "market" is simply reaching effciency, but I now find that I can usually buy the same item at retail for the same or less than on Ebay - and often...

    My Son's Bedroom

Looks great! I've been wanting to do something similar for my son's room and haven't got 'round to it yet. Very nice.

    HO radius recommendation

22" radius means the radius along the centerline of the curve. i.e. if you imagine a quarter-of-a-pie-shaped slice the two straight parts would be 22" long and the curve would be the track (on a 22" radius curve). Another way to look at it is that a 22" radius curve takes 44" to turn fully...

    Swap meet Finds!

Does anyone know a good source for finding events like this? I can find things that list the NMRA conventions, the standard traveling shows and the like, but not anything like this.

    arond the walls

Just a thought... Most Nolix layouts aren't a constant grade, but have flat areas at yards, towns, etc. Anywhere you have switching going on. Otherwise you get rolling stock taking a loooong roll to the bottom anytime you decouple them. Also, realize that _starting_ on a grade from a standstill...

    Staging Help Needed

I forgot to mention, one other change I made. I would push the "top" curve as far back as possible - your limiting factor there seems to be the track leading to staging on the right which must clear the wall you've indicated... So I actually proposed two changes to what Trainclown suggested...

    Staging Help Needed

I think trainclown has hit upon your best possible solution, which is to manage the grades so that your staging can run under the helix. I would, myself, de-complicate the actual suggestion for a staging environment, though. Get rid of what appear to be runaround, loco storage, etc. tracks in...

    Model Railroader Magazine

Good point, Tileguy. Upon reflection, I completely agree. The problem isn't whether I minded sending this one thing back to Kalmbach, but rather the 'slippery slope' it creates where you get a mailbox full of unwanted junque every day... So I think the best way to avoid this is the teach the...

    Destroyed Locomotive collection

Ouch! What a shame! I feel your pain, a little. All my childhood trains recently came back to me on Mom's latest trip... For years I've been asking after them, and only now has she cleared enough junk out of the basement to get to them. The results weren't pretty. The trains have obviously...

    Model Railroader Magazine

I'll chime in here too... both on the video and the way it was sent out. I'll say up front I'm an MR subscriber, plan to remain one, and am generally a fan of the mag. I got and watched the video: Ho-hum. I have the same issue with it that I have with MR in general. I'd rather see fewer, more...

    Staging Help Needed

Clark, I'm confused... Where are the helix entrance/exit points on the staging level? Is that the "mainline" you show (i.e. the mainline running through lower level staging), or is that the main level mainline and the staging entrance/exit is 'free form' off the helix?

    DCC decision time

Antonio - I came down to the same "final two" when I went DCC. I ended up with the Lenz in the end, only because I knew I was likely to overburden the PA's amperage limit. Having said that, a key consideration is the throttle - the "interface" you'll be using constantly to run your trains...

    Lin Westcott's 1958 Switchman's Nightmare

PS - The very best analogy I've seen is to one of those number puzzles - the 4x4 grids with sliding numbers from 1-15 and one blank space to allow movement. Either it's maddening and you give up, or you discover the limited number of "moves" available to do a task - e.g. to shift a tile one up...

    Lin Westcott's 1958 Switchman's Nightmare

Personally, I absolutely agree with the article posted above about the timesaver. It's a game, not something you put on a layout (or do as a layout). I've not built one, but a friend of mine has one, gathering dust as it happens. As Freelancer points out, once you've "done" it a few times the...

    Wireless Throttle(s)

I am definitely planning to go wireless. I'd like to get a throttle/receiver combo that will work with my Lenz Set-100 command station. I definitely DO NOT want the Lenz cordless-phone-to-throttle adapter -- tried it at a friends and bleah. In fact, i'd like to get a few throttles. At least one...

    Booster?

Thanks, Bob. Great info, especially the 2nd post - exactly what I was confused about. I get it now. Running locos is absolutely NOT the constraint. I can't envision running more than about 10 at once - and that very rarely if I had several buddies over. I'd venture to say that 90% of the time...

    Christmas List

Or switch to Z-scale and build an empire in a closet... Regardless, I hope you get your wish Ray. But realize it's a two-edged sword. I just got a train room about 4x bigger than I ever hoped for... And am realizing I can't do everything I want to even in there, and could easily use 4x _that_...

    Layout Update

Okay, last post for now - This shows the "rest" of the basement and may clarify.

    Layout Update

To clarify one thing: Both doors go into/out of the train area from the "rest of the basement" area. That's where the stairs, furnace, electric panel, water heater and workbench all live... In other words you can go in/out one door and can walk over and go in/out the other -- they go to the same...

    Layout Update

There's no "upper deck" per se. It's all one deck with logging line on a higher elevation. The 'primary' entrance is the door at lower right, and yes that would be via duckunder or (maybe eventually) a lift-bridge. Setting the layout height at 55" plus should minimize the pain of that (it's an...
