How to make real Chains on your handrails

The method I've seen for attaching the chains is to take a tiny piece of 0.010 wire and bend it to an L shape. Then you can loop the end chain onto the wire and it has something to "hang" onto... then a dab of CA glue to keep it there. I read about this in an article and it seems to be a good...

    RTR Freight Car(s)

The thought of building mass quantities of cars like P2k or Int Mnt kits is too much for me. I've built a few of them, but that takes allot of patients, and during the last 5 years or so, my eyes have gotten so I have to old things farther away. Plus, I've always had trouble find a good gluing...

    RTR Freight Car(s)

If that Conrail box car came in an Athearn blue box, it was probably re-boxed by someone - it is definitely a Model Die Casting car - the one I mentioned above. I'm looking right at it in my Walthers Catalogue (1999, page 174 if you have that one) as I type this. No biggie though - did you get...

    RTR Freight Car(s)

Chessie, That Conrail box car looks strangely like a Model Die Casting car, not Athearn. Am I right? Looking at my 1999 Walthers catalogue, the brown Conrail box car is listed as a 50' Ribbed Side Flat Top Hi Cube with single plug doors #480-1822

    Another Atlas veteran checks in

This would be Jim, I have Deans email, so I could alert him to the locations we have found. I hang here and http://www.railroadforum.com/forum/default.asp?Group=13 Christian still did post, and I expect he'll be back in August, but yes, he was posting less and less.

    RTR Freight Car(s)

I prefer to use the Sprue nippers like the ones sold by P-B-L, those work excellent and are easy to use with extreemly small risk of ruining parts. If you are careful, no trimming is required at all.

    Levels of detail

Super duper! Yep - I was aiming my phillosohpical comments at people on both ends of the extreme's. Since I have been banished to a small apartment for a period of time, I maybe setting up an EZ track layout myself for a while. :-( I suppose the issues about RTR stuff is that it isn't...

    Lighten up!

Er, how does model RRing fit into this equation? Heh heh! THose two items are sooooooooooo true! I have been separated for 4 years, so I speak from experience!

Chessie, My approach to buying HO engines is to buy whatever is appropriate for my RR - the Rio Grande. I do avoid certain brands, but mainly because there are issues with them and they are "cheap" and more toy like. There is room for everyone to buy and enjoy what they like for sure. But I...

    Deutsch Loco in the USA?

I'd wager the first picture is of one of the ex-D&RGW Krausse Maffai locos - I can tell because of the air intake vents added by the Rio Grande to make them tunnel motors. Those are the ones low on the body, for and aft of the fuel tank.

It's Monday, What did we get done?

I did some stuff like that too! Glad I'm not the only one guilty of not modeling! I boxed up my train magazines and did get some framing and styrofoam moved over here toward a small test layout. That and sold some more trains stuff I didn't need to raise more cash for new stuff.

VERY excited! Found MY train ;)

My Tyco set also had that little 4 wheel switcher - you had to run it fast or it would stall on turnouts and dirty track. As for converting and weathering the cars, that does do a world of improvement to them for sure, but I can still tell the difference between them and most of the better...

VERY excited! Found MY train ;)

jjjetta, I apologize if I sounded critical... I didn't mean to cast ill will toward you and I can understand how you may feel. The bottom line is if you are enjoying your trains. I know that people enjoy the hobby from many different levels so I hope you are successful at improving your...

    What color ballast?

For ballast, you have to check and see what your favorite RR used. It is often determined by the source the RR has for cheap ballast within the area. Rio Grande used slag for much of there ballast, so it appears black or very dark gray. I some places they did use other ballast too.

VERY excited! Found MY train ;)

jjjetta, I had a Tyco train set as a kid too, but my memories have never been that fond, since cheap train sets never run very well. If you do the following: clean, lube (sparingly) the engine & tender, and shine the track, that will allow your set to run as well as possible. I have always...

What I Been Up To Lately:Passenger Station Diorama

I'm no expert, but I'd try drilling a few shallow holes, and then fill in with some kind of putty or spackle. That would give the patched look, then paint the patch with a dark gray color or whatever patches usually look like.

What I Been Up To Lately:Passenger Station Diorama

Tom, That Folk Art Dark Gray paint looks like it would work well for stream beds where the water is deep enough to be dark. It seems a bit too dark for roads, especially a lighltly used road that might be faded from age and neglect. You could alway air brush it to a lighter color for sun...

    A new equation for HO

Accurail has been around for more than 15 years, but it's most active period was prior to the year 2000. Before that, they were actively buying tooling from other makers like Wind Mill Hobbies Custom Rail flat cars and autoracks, as well as Front Range / McKean box cars and others. Accurail...
