I like the track hoe and the back hoe. Nice vehicles!

    T&TO Vs YUGO IGO

Man, that made my head hurt! I am glad my little one man show is just a little shortline delivering a few cars to the industries and dragging a few back to the interchanges.

    I'm new here...and need guidance

I am partial to HO so I am sure my answer is biased. I'd go with HO because I think the youngster would prefer something bigger rather than something smaller. It will be a bit easier to handle and the tolerances aren't quite as critical as in N scale. Hey MKH, you don't have to use that...

    Feeder Lines

Stranded #12 is what I used for my bus wire. There is not much difference between the electrical characteristics of solid or stranded wire for model railroad bus wire, so your stranded #14 will be just fine. As was mentioned above, instead of going the full 78 feet with the wire, branch out in...

    OBS rides again

No problem, Dave. Glad we are here for you. When you get a chance, post some pics of the new trains.

    MRP 2007 - Realistic Layout

Have any of you seen this one? Page 48 in the 2007 MRP. Not all that big, just a 1 foot by 16 foot shelf, but to me, it is the most realistic layout I have ever seen. The guy did a terrific job. Check it out if you can... and do you agree with my assessment?

    making decals

Ralph, I did essentially the same thing on a couple of Galveston Wharves boxcars I did. The logo has a white seagull... I used white decal paper... oulined it in orange to match the car body color. Then used some paint to blend the edges and then with some weathering, it looks pretty good. I...

Where do the Empties come from?

Kutler, thank you for that photo. I may be persuaded to do something like that. The only road I knew of that used the SF yellow bonnet scheme was the LAJ. I wonder if there are even more. And thanks for the info too. I'm still leaning towards car cards, but agree that sorting them and all...

    Nomad Valley R.R.

Darn, I did spend $30 for the wooden throttle hangers :curse:

    Nomad Valley R.R.

Man, you guys are cracking me up tonight! I thought that maybe you used them to hang your throttles on or something like that. But I like your idea better. I am going to put some on my fascia, but I'll have to go with the cheapie 99 cent wooden ones instead of the high dollar metal...

    Rail Crews on my shortline

Oh, there's no hurry, and I know I should slow down and make ZERO mistakes, but for some reason I just don't think everything through. Perhaps it is because I am busy just admiring the trains and marveling that they even run at all! And I haven't thrown any switches while a train was...

    Thoughts On Designing A ISL

Andrew, if you have the date of the magazine, I may have it. One thing I could do extra is, as the cars are coming back to the interchange, I could have designated tracks where the cars would be sorted to, requiring me to break up the train and shuffle the cars to the different tracks...

    Is this normal?

Russ, thanks for the wisdom in your post. I am the only operator, so a layout twice as big as the current one would require much more work for me. I think the current layout will serve me well for several years at least. As for the garage, this one actually has TWO garage doors and we park...

    Rail Crews on my shortline

Well, right now, for facing point switches, I just keep the engine running while I throw the switches ahead. For trailing point switches, I just run through them until the engine shorts on the frog because I forgot to align the switch (:curse:DOH!) I am trying to develop the habit of planning...

    Is this normal?

Hey everyone, I AM normal after all! But, I have successfully put aside the thoughts of a big ol' building in the backyard and will continue with what I have now. Whew, barely escaped! Sorry about that, Scubadude! Now, maybe 15 years from now after I retire, I'll have time for such a...

    Thoughts On Designing A ISL

I would consider my layout to be an ISL, even though it is 75 feet long. I just spaced things out more, longer industry tracks, larger buildings. I'm happy with it for the most part, and it seems to operate well. My two concerns are 1) the buildings are basically evenly spaced around the...

    Nomad Valley R.R.

Thanks for posting the photos, Loren! I've been itching to see what you've done lately. The cardstock building looks terrific. And I can see that you've been having fun running the trains. Hey, what are all those silver knobs on the fascia?

    Rail Crews on my shortline

Heehee! That's pretty funny! On the layout, the simple thing to do is for me to just throw the switches whenever I need to. But learning about the actual process and how the crew handles each situation is very interesting. I appreciate everyone's input on the subject, and am looking forward...

Anybody else notice Trucklover's gone missing?

That is good to hear. I had noticed that he was missing also, and was wondering if he had started on that bedroom layout yet. I was figuring he was bogged down with school and homework.
