    Sailor Figures

I had a look for some 15mm wargames figures for gun crews and officers, but after a while with no luck I gave up. I suppose one could convert architectural or railway figures... Keep us posted. D

Tripods are the key (got at least 5 in the house) from dinky table top toys to might steel towers with a maximum lift of well over 2m. I have a well loved, well used and very heavy example for most of my model pictures. Its a real windy day tripod and too heavy to carry about without a very good...

Awww you all say such nice things... bit busy at work but will provide the final instalment in a day or three. David, the cube is just as you say, it is 5 centimetres on a side and give scale to models and individual components. In my profession we always use a suitable scale when photographing...

[Free Model #3] - Canon's Komatsu Loading Shovel

I have to admit I do keep thinking about the mobile crane... always loved those things. Saw an awesome 8 wheel off-road pipe carrying truck today on a construction site. It was a bit futuristic looking, forward control cab like the crane or the Alvis Stalwart, but the tyres were even bigger...

[Free Model #3] - Canon's Komatsu Loading Shovel

Thanks, not much more to do now. I thought long and hard before I started (commuting has some uses after all) and considered several other models prior to selecting this one. I have resisted the temptation to add new detail and prefered to try and trick the eye with dark grey paint and by...

[Free Model #3] - Canon's Komatsu Loading Shovel

Railings... Hi Guys, Pictures not words. Railings are the printed parts laminated to 0.5mm card and painted with cyanoacrylate using a toilet tissue "brush" then painted dark grey with a touch of PVA added. I cut the centres from the rear view mirrors and put silver card in. Wheels...

[Free Model #3] - Canon's Komatsu Loading Shovel

Hi all, Just the quickest of updates. A lot of fiddling with little bits you can barely see like the side boxes that supports the deck and a last minute change of heart; the cab windows just could not remain unglazed. I am looking forward to fabricating the safety railings over the...

[Free Model #3] - Canon's Komatsu Loading Shovel

Not too many words. I should remark that so far it has all gone together very accurately and straight. The big hinge is a cylinder of rolled card rather than the odd hexagonal device supplied in the kit, I bushed the pivots with paper as well to beef them up a touch. Oh, thanks...

[Free Model #3] - Canon's Komatsu Loading Shovel

Hi guys, no progress but some pictures I took after my last post was made. I just had to offer up the various components for a check on their general arrangement and fit. Thanks for the kind words on the wheels / tyres a you can see they are not as perfect as my earlier pictures...

[Free Model #3] - Canon's Komatsu Loading Shovel

A quick extra on the laminating. I laminated "outward" so the gap between arms stayed the correct width for part 16. Luckily Keisuki Saka, the designer, made the pivots on the front truck wide enough to take this huge increase in arm thickness... I am thinking about beefing up the bucket...

[Free Model #3] - Canon's Komatsu Loading Shovel

A Bank Holiday well spent doing what I wanted to do, the best. However, cycling into a blizzard in late March in Yorkshire was cold! Still playing with subassemblies, Canon are big on this tactic and to be honest in the past it has been a bit of a turn off. Their models all rely heavily on...

[Free Model #3] - Canon's Komatsu Loading Shovel

Well I said I would join in. So far in 2008 I have been a bit pressed for time so not a lot of model building has gone on: * Work * Family * Lots of cycling to reduce my girth! But there's nothing like a deadline to focus ones mind so here we go. Available from the Canon site at...

    Silkspan for hulls?

Smooth Hulls What I wouldn't give for an unrealistically smooth hull! I could understand a beat up WWII corvette or even a world weary bulk carrier but at a scale of 1:200 or less it could look kinda crude. I strive for smooth because I like to see the look of amazement on my...

    Silkspan for hulls?

In balsa modelling it is called the starved horse effect, where the tissue sinks slightly between formers. You can eliminate it by having lots of structure to hold the tissue up (heavy if you fly) or by practising a lot! You might escape the tissue shrinking too much and twisting the formers by...
