    Christmas tree layout

Short of methods that involve restraints or barriers nope ... Some kids wouldn't touch it but others will. This info is from a someone who had three children, my two girls wouldn't have touched it but the boy would have. Kids are all different you know . I'll see what my grand...

Here is a thread dealing with yard design etc ..... http://www.the-gauge.com/showthread.php?t=11712 There is also a rather complete article from a back issue of a magazine referenced in one of the responses in the thread. It is worth joining the yahoo group it is hosted on.

    Model Railyard Operations

Well the trains can stop, backup, go forward, and the couplers on the cars can be operated, so the short answer is yes you can build up scale trains just like the prototypes do. In fact you'll find all sorts of actual operations taking place on a club layout. I currently operate a very...

    N-gauge kits -- Different scale?!

Frank, It sounds like they got a N Scale labeled box and put a HO structure in it. Apply the universal solution to it, Dremel Tool it till it's correct . I have never had any Model Power items so I can't really say much, others say that they are out of scale. In any event it...

    Tried DCC Accessory Routing but....

Are you paying attention to the direction that the points must move when setting up those switches. 2-12 in the manual speaks to this. I don't have such a critter to play with so I'm sitting here with pdfs of the manuals but haven't a clue as to how you have that unit wired to the...

    N-gauge kits -- Different scale?!

Don't know what to tell you Frank. If you look at houses they aren't all the same size. I'm sitting in a fairly sizable one it has 15 rooms. The one across the street probably has 10, my first house had 6. That is quite a range for a structure, you need to know what size the prototype was.

    Christmas tree layout

Pardon, Have you ever taken an adding machine to your "little" toy train stuff ? Let's see DCC system $139, two DCC locos $190, 26 pieces of rolling stock $286, 10 turnouts $72, 10 switch machines $80 ... now just keep a adding ... $767 so far and not a bit of wood for a frame or base, no...

    Electrical Problem - Any Suggestions?

What you need is a full 25 conductor straight through rs232 cable. Radio Shack used to sell these, maybe they still do. Do you have a Best Buy handy they sell a number of cables for computers. A null modem replaces a real modem by routing the send wire to the receive pin on one end...

    Electrical Problem - Any Suggestions?

Actually very few wires are needed (ground, transmit, and recieve) for rs232 the "normal" use of the DB25 cables. At one time you took your life in your hands playing with a "rs232" connector that was plugged into a device. There used to be all kinds of things done with the "spare" wires...

    Anyone using XTrkCad?

I've played with the demo version of it. I found it much easier to use if you get rid of all of the track templates that you don't use and if you add a template for a single flex track section. It also helps if you have a large screen and a decent mouse. I will be buying this program...

What do you like moste about modle railroading?

Everything we buy goes on the card if possible and it gets paid off every month, so I don't care about the rate on my card. Now if I could only get the gas company to direct debit my checking account or charge my card I'd be a very happy camper. I like only having to write one check and...

Any Broadway Limited Gurus out there?

Bob, I haven't a clue right off the top of my head. I'd check the following: 1. that the controller was set to the same address that the loco was 2. that the track is clean 3. that the loco wheels are clean 4. that there weren't any pieces of packing material in the electrical...

    Lighting in N

There are some very small leds, including some surface mounts. However I haven't played with any so I can't tell if they would work or not. What have you played with in regards to fiber. It may be a matter of some heat forming that would do the trick. I've got to get an experimenters...

It's MONDAY 11-22-04, weekend modeling accomplishments!

Tom, You didn't just buy a $45 PS and replace the bad one? I've still got my first "IBM Comp PC" well the case/PS/FD/NIC anyway and my second one case/FD/HD/DVD/Soundcard. The first has been used for 12 years and the second for 6 years. My third one has parts from the second one in it.

    2 Q's about switches & DCC

Code 55 turnouts use under table switch motors or manual throws. I will be using code 55 when I get to laying track. I just finished retrofiting my rolling stock so it can run on code 40 or 55 rail. It is still a while before I get to spiking track. Now it is time for me to call it a...

It's MONDAY 11-22-04, weekend modeling accomplishments!

Well I didn't get any frames done, but I did get my 4-8-4 Steam Engine cleaned up, re lubed, the wheels fairly in gauge (got to get a set, can't find my old ones ), a couple of broken pieces back together (the cat), and it now runs fairly well. I think a bit more running to spread the lube...

    Lets have the truth please.

You might also want to read this thread: http://www.the-gauge.com/showthread.php?t=11533 dealing with wiring. David is correct about not relying on the track to provide layout wide continuity, it can if you bond each joint using solder but that leads to other possible problems. BTW...

    Lets have the truth please.

DCC requires only two wires to go to the layout provided there are no reversing loops, wyes with two or more sides joined, or turntables, and you have continuity over the entire layout.. Those little gotchas are the only real gotchas and are there no matter what you do if you run two rail...

Any Broadway Limited Gurus out there?

This may be of interest to you: http://www.loystoys.com/dcc-specialties/dcs-pax.html Seems there is a little problem with being able to program the decoders in BL locos. Also: http://www.the-gauge.com/showthread.php?t=11777

    N-Scale beginner w/questions

I makes no difference if you run analog or DCC trains, all reversing systems, that includes, reversing loops, turntables, wyes with at least two sides connected require special consideration when it comes to wiring. A reversing section is a dead short otherwise, because you are making the...
