    HOn30 0-4-0 Baldwin Scratchbuild Project

I've decided that I need a good 0-4-0 in my loco collection. The donor chassis is a minitrix 0-6-0 that was converted to an 0-4-0 ages ago for a project that didn't go well. I'm not a big fan of inside framed steamers. In fact, I generally don't like the look of them. There've only been two...

    Girls like trains?

Everyone loves models of things. The novelty of a miniature world is universally appealing - I've met plenty of husband and wife teams who take equal interest in it. Kids who you would expect to ridicule it have sometimes in my experience been fascinated by it and confessed to "loving that kind...

    A question of terminology...?

The verb singular for a route operated by one train (be it a single piece of equipment or 5 kilometers of cars) is a service. If the company operates only one piece of equipment, on only one route, then it can call itself a company, a service provider, a route operator, or railway company, but...

I had to Quit my module club

That sucks, I can understand where you're coming from, I think, if I read right. You left out a few words from your post I think! (no worries, I do that all the time when I'm in a hurry) If I get the jist of what you're saying, you had to leave because the meetings were too frequent..? The...

HO Bachmann Spectrum 44 ton to HOe/HOn3 Oahu Railway GE 47 ton

I believe he said that he did not, since it was not noticeable. I'm inclined to disagree that it isn't noticeable, but would rather say it doesn't make a huge impact on the appearance of the model. Since the model is mostly accurate, and since the wheels only make up a very small part of the...

Examining the On30 Bachmann Outside Frame 2-8-0

Thanks, can't believe I didn't notice you had a site! Oh well.

Examining the On30 Bachmann Outside Frame 2-8-0

Wow Harold, was your layout a marijuana growing area in a past life by any chance? That's some pretty serious lighting you've got going on there! :D Not meaning to derail (heh) the thread, but could you give a bit of advice on lighting layouts? I must confess to be a bit of a novice to it...

Examining the On30 Bachmann Outside Frame 2-8-0

Cool, it would be interesting to see what else could be done with it. :)

On3 vs On30...where do you get track?

The way I've always done it has been to use marine plywood (ordinary plywood is fine, I just happen to know a person who works for a boat building company who gives me free offcuts), and use that for the baseboard and raised platforms, which I support with blocks of pine. I place styrofoam...

On3 vs On30...where do you get track?

Certainly let us hear how you get on. You seem like the kind of guy who knows exactly what he wants and thinks everything through, which is great. You should stick around and give advice to some of the new guys (and old guys too, we're all still learning really) as your project progresses.

Examining the On30 Bachmann Outside Frame 2-8-0

I don't know if anyone has brought this up yet or not, but the 2-8-0 is potentially a very good donor chassis for any outside framed project. I was considering it at one point for a project to build a Fowler 0-6-0 diesel, using the 4th flycrank as the power transmission crank. It has just the...

On3 vs On30...where do you get track?

Before you make the leap, you ought to be aware that On30 can be a good choice and a bad choice depending on many things. It is not necessarily easier to scratchbuild in On30, for one reason: On30 is larger, which means that you do need to put more in the same space to save it from appearing...

    oahu 47t locomotive

I believe the man you're referring to is me. :thumb: As I mentioned in my response to your PM, the project has been put on hold, but I will be returning to it in the future. Here's the thread for those of you who have not seen it; http://www.the-gauge.com/showthread.php?t=19125

On3 vs On30...where do you get track?

I should probably point out here that there are a number of manufacturers who produce kits, so not everything has to be scratchbuilt. RTR is rare in narrow gauge because it is a minority/specialist hobby. However in countries where narrow gauge is fairly standard, RTR narrow gauge is widely...

    Alco C430

Yes I am aware of this. Model Power now have the tyco tooling, and they still make the C430, but the body detail is clumsy compared to the Stewart C630. Since the C430 is just a shorter version of the C630 (in terms of the body), I would prefer to use the stewart body. Thankyou for the comment...

    Alco C430

Hello all. Once I get my F7A out of the way, I plan to make an Alco C430. I've got a vague idea of how I might do the build, but I want to run it by you guys first to see what you all think. I want to use a Stewart Hobbies C630 shell, cut that down to the right length. I'll use Atlas...

    Athearn F unit suggestions?

I bumped into that page randomly while searching on google, but I didn't realise it was a details west page. It's quite informal. And that D&RGW (I think) f unit is encrusted in detail parts! Just out of interest do you have any idea of how many parts are included in thier f unit detail kit?

    Athearn F unit suggestions?

I've worked out that I need to replace the numberboards, add lift rings, grab irons, handrails, a speedometer, new horns, exhuast deflectors, and maybe a few other bits, depending on the prototype. I've removed the steam generating equipment... I believe some units had their oil cooler mounted...

    Athearn Genesis Sd70m

Lol, it's a safety cab, which way did you expect it to run? Those NS people might be concerned about safety but they're not THAT concerned. :P For the record, I've noticed that they tend to ignore the "long hood forward" rule anyway, and just run their lead units short hood forward. Their high...

    Athearn F unit suggestions?

I take it the old pilot has to be sawn off in order to add the new one. I noticed the nose being slightly incorrect actually, and the part where the cab windows meet the nose is the wrong shape. There are numerous other flaws, the biggest one being the window shape (which I've corrected)...
